Price seems to be a big turnoff for many. There’s a Crossfit gym literally three blocks away from my house. I thought about going there in the past but not for these prices:
Yeah, but at a normal gym you don’t get any coaching at all. Or the type of equipment we have with the liberty to actually train hard. The membership fee is all you’ll ever pay me. Most people think its pretty cheap for what you get. I’ve never had a single complaint. We aren’t bringing people in and turning them loose on a sea of equipment.
I build programs and teach lifts and gymnastics movements and help with diet. My people will never be able to go to a regular gym because people don’t train seriously there.

I train seriously at a “regular gym”. Just because you have your little area where you can run around doesn’t mean other people who can’t afford the extra $1,380/year don’t train seriously. You’re a fucking idiot if you actually think that.
And who’s to say that your coaching or nutritional advice are even correct? Obviously it’s miraculously easy to be Crossfit certified.

I go to a commercial gym and train my ass off. I’ve made sure to have a good relationship with the staff, and they leave me alone to train how I see fit (Dls, Oly Lifts, chalk, etc.). Costs me $100/year. Also, it seems that the problem the author had was that the coaching people were getting at Crossfit was SHITTY. So, why pay extra to get crappy coaching? On another note, anyone else find the white text on black background of that blog to be very headache-inducing?
You all can rip all you want, but you don’t know me or my coaching level. My people know what they get and find it well worth it. When I said people don’t train hard at commercial gyms, well, that’s generally true. So if that shoe fits, wear it, if not, disregard. At my gym I have the set up and space to do just about anything. My people do very, very well. My people have told me after training here they couldn’t go back to a regular gym exactly for the reasons I’ve stated.
And, hey, I used to train at a commercial gym, its a pain in the ass because there are too many people doing stupid shit and the whole place and attitude is antagonistic to actual hard training. I’ve also trained at serious gyms where serious athletes and lifters train. At those places you pay a premium even if you aren’t getting coaching because they are there for a small segment of the population. At my gym I’m not looking for the average gym rat or guy who wants to do bench and curls everyday. I get serious trainees here who want good coaching. People who want that don’t mind paying for it, in fact, my prices are pretty cheap.
And you don’t us either. So, don’t go around making blanket statements about how hard people work. That’s like saying the president doesn’t work hard because you haven’t seen him working.
It’s annoying at a commercial gym when people do stupid shit, yes, but if you just gain some patience, you’ll be fine and learn to laugh it off or even help them not do stupid shit.

Maybe you are the one-in-fifty Crossfit center that is worth anything (as stated in the original blog). If so, great. That doesn’t make up for the systemic issues with the rest of the organization.

I charge 115/mo unlimited and we do not do group setting stuff. It isn’t 1 on 1 and I’m not babysitting you, but I’m coaching, I liken it to sports training. At my place the newer people get more help and the people who have been with me a while do their workout and I help them as needed. It works really well.
$115 A MONTH? Holy shit, are there fluffing stations in the locker room? Because that is fucking expensive as hell just on the membership. I could belong to two gyms for that, one with a pool and indoor track in the rich neighborhood.
The one near me is $180 per month for unlimited access. The $150 only allows 12 visits per month.
Holy fucking shit expensive batman. WOW!
I had no idea…[/quote]
Wow that’s kind of crazy. I mean I’d understand paying a good amount for some 1-on-1 training with a good reputable coach for a month. Yet to pay that much every month seems like some are getting taken advantage of. Wtf @ only 12 visits per month after dropping that kind of money?
I’d rather go pay the likes of say Joe Defranco, about anyone from EliteFTS and Justin Harris/Shelby Sternes of Troponin.
I drop a whopping $29.99 a month on a gym with an indoor track, pool, sauna etc…unlimited use with the only exception is short hours on Sunday and are not open 24 hours. I guess it’s one of the last hold out gyms that allow screaming, slamming, hollering and whatever you want as long as it’s not vulgar. Why? cause it’s a fuckin’ gym.
Seems to me once you establish yourself there as a serious lifter the staff opens right up and helps you keep advancing. Crossfit is like any other newly named fad of a routine…the testimonials of achieving so much greatness from it were doing pretty much nothing and crammin’ donuts before starting it.

A VERY broad statement. I have trained at hardcore gyms, commercial gyms and now at home. If someone is serious about training; it doesn’t matter where they train. I have never been to a Crossfit gym, nor do I have any particular like or dislike for them. However, the ingrained elitism in your last statement is the attitude that turns most people off to crossfit. If you are good at what you do, be proud of it; but there is a point at which confidence becomes arrogance.

How much do you think quality coaching costs? Defranco and Zach Even-Esch both charge at least twice that. Not saying the service is comparable, but that is not even close to expensive.

The guys you listed I assumed were up there in price, CF on the other hand shocked me being this expensive.

The prices on that wisconsin one are for GROUP classes! So you don’t even get 1-on-1 coaching. And comparing some yahoo who did a 2-day class to DeFranco is just silly.
“I have had the biggest guys in the group at three consecutive Barbell certs, and not one of them could press 125 for 5. You better believe though that they critiqued Andy Boltonâ??s bodyweight and appearance, and Vasily Alexievâ??s press technique during the video portion of the seminar” John Sheaffer
cant press 125 for 5 and they criticise Andy Bolton and Vasily Alexiev…un fucking believable.
