Thanks My body would be ‘complete’ if I could just get rid off my love handles. Maybe not complete. Maybe just look better. A page or two back I posted a 4 week update. My profile has older pics.
Today’s Workout
front squat - 3x5x285
military - 2x5x170
1x3x170
barbell rows - 3x5x240
chin-ups - 1x12xbw
1x6xbw
bw = 241
Business as usual. I think my chin-ups went down or stagnated. I was tired after, everything. Front squats were a beast. The bar almost rolled on me on the last rep. I’ll keep the weight for another workout or two. I will do the same amount on the military next time as well. My shoulder is still sore. Nothing painful. I mentioned somewhere (gooch?) that it pops in the morning when I do a lat spread, but nothing after that. Military definitely felt more manageable. It was just … heavy.
Question for you. What happens if you get sick and you’re out of commission for a week? Do you simply pick up where you left off as soon as possible?
Also (and this question may make me sound naive!) is it possible to lose ground with your lifts if you’re off for a week?

It happened and yes.
I was sick 2 or 3 weeks ago. I missed one week. I thought it was the end of the world. The actual workout was difficult because I wasn’t used to it and I had DOMS big time the next couple of days. It’s amazing how our body’s adapt. I’ll go back and look to see what I did.
Your not being naive. I would hope you would not lose too much although it is possible because you have not been training and you have been sick.
My squats decreased by 5 lbs, but I still increased my bench by 10 and deadlift by 30. At the time it was all pretty difficult. I’m not sure why I decreased by squats though.
My advice its fine if you go back a step because you know you will be beyond it in 1-2 workouts. Not a big deal.

If you’re getting sick and your squat is decreasing, you are probably starting to overtrain. Start thinking hard about Madcow. He starts with a deload and then progresses with weekly increases.

Sorry Stu, I was responding to Tonino’s question. I’m not sick. I feel really good. I am torn between Starr and Stronglifts.
Sorry, I missread it.
I did the Starr program and it worked pretty good. I must be a little old for it though as I overtrained and got sick after about 8 weeks. I spend more time balancing recovery now.
Currently I do a 4 way split, 2 lower (quad/ham)and 2 upper(Vert/Horiz). They are actually all whole body in that I incorporate into my warmup whatever I don’t do in my workout and that seems to work. I get the conditioning benefit of a whole body workout, I can delete stuff off the end of the the workouts or take an extra day off if I need it since I’m not tied to a 7 day routine.
i’m going to start using Rippetoe as of March… by May i want to cut for the summer… people have recommended the TNT plan for cutting…
would it be possible to continue the Rippetoe workouts but with the TNT diet for the cut? i’d love to get the gains you have throughout this program ‘Dude’!!

It’s funny, I’ve always tried to avoid getting sick simply because of the inconvenience of being sick. Now, I try to avoid getting sick because I don’t want to disrupt my workout routine and progress!!

Stu, I was actually referring to coming down with something. I was afraid that if I was kept out of the gym for a week, that my progress would decrease the next time I get back to the gym.

I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t be able to do both. You should be able to combine any weight loss program with any strength training program. When dieting you really want to minimize muscle loss as much as possible.
How restrictive is the caloric intake for TNT? I’m not familiar with the diet. I would love to have my gains during a caloric deficit as well!
In other news, I had to wear a tie today. Too bad I couldn’t button the top button on my shirt. Evidently my neck grew. Without checking it is either 17" or 17.5".

i havn’t read the whole book yet, but from what i gather its no carbs untill before or after your training… the idea being you lose any fat, but still feed your muscles enough around training time for them to grow…
theres like 6 different programs to follow depending on what your goals are, i.e. just fat loss, or maintaining lean mass while losing fat after a bulk etc…
seemed like a sensible way to cut, but im a couple of months off that yet… ![]()
congrats on the neck increase! this is really working out for you huh?!

Taking a week off won’t hurt and the break could do you good. Just repeat the week from before and carry on.

Just read through a few pages and was impressed. Very nice work man. I still cant handle your FS numbers. Keep up the progress.

Today’s Workout
front squat - 3x5x285
bench press - 3x5x245
deadlift 1x5x335
dips - 28xbw
bw = 242
I stayed home with the kids today so that my wife could go on a field trip with my oldest. I don’t feel rested for not having done anything.
Front Squat - These were tough today. I didn’t feel in the groove. I squeezed them out though.
Bench Press - There’s something about the last set, of all the exercises. Maybe subconsciously I know that I’m done. The second set was more difficult than the third. Go figure. I might have been able to do 1 or 2 more reps on the last set. Look out 250 'cause here I come!
Deadlift - I own you sucka! I don’t want to say it felt light, but I easily could have done 10-20 lbs more if my grip didn’t give out. Thankfully it was on the last rep, at the top. So I did complete the rep, but it came crashing down. Oh well. I workout alone. I don’t think the bar bent though. I kind of knew it was going to go well because during warm-up 275 flew up. I was happy. Just last week it felt nailed to the floor.
Dips - I think I added 2 reps to last week. That’s good. The deal with my wife was to get down to 220 before I could get a dip belt. I don’t think I’m losing 20 lbs anytime soon.

Stu, thanks for the advice… will do!!
