The Drawbacks To Juicing, Etc.

OK so that other juicing thread gave me some good ideas .

Throughout my quest to become the most insanely strongest and hugest man on planet earth, i’ve always had trouble with choking down all those vegetables. You see, before I started getting into strength training, i had never been any sort of a vegetable eater. In fact, I probably only ate vegetables about once per year. That’s no exageration. I guess it wasnt a problem seeing as i’m still young and skinny, so i generally never had to worry about anything healthwise.

So basically, rather than eat a whole bunch of shitty carbs i think i’ll have a go at juicing (ehhh… and by that i mean VEGETABLES). That is until i become more accustomed to actually EATING the vegetables. I’m pretty sure i wont have any problems with “drinking vegetables” as opposed to eating them, as it seems to be a matter of texture rather than taste. I hate eating leaves…

So I have a couple of questions. Firstly, besides effing with the fiber, what are the other drawbacks of juicing as opposed to eating vegetables?

What would you recommend as far as fiber supplements go? Are there any specific brands that are better than others? I really have no idea about this sort of thing.

Lastly, what about that “V8” stuff? My mom used to buy it and i’m pretty sure i liked the stuff. However, i know almost no one on this site is a big fan of stuff that comes in a can/bag/box etc. Is there something about V8 that makes it suck? I’m not sure whether or not it’s pasteurized… I’m guessing it is though…

So does this sound like a viable alternative to actually chewin all that green crap? If so… a few recipes couldn’t hurt.

thanks in advance

Oh deary me!
Sounds like you really want to avoid real food, anyway as an alternative try vegetable based soup!
You need fibre (english spelling)for colon health. My father has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer - he’s never been a big eater of veggies either, but he did eat them more than once a year.

It’s less a matter of not wanting to eat the vegetables as it is a matter of wanting to eat MORE vegetables. I do eat vegetables now, everyday several times in fact. The real problem is that i have a hard time eating ENOUGH vegetables to meet my calorie needs in full. I’ll make myself a huge ass salad and end up throwing almost a third of it away or giving it to my dad, and instead grab for a peice of bread.

Since i’d rather save the grains for when they’ll be more effective (post workout etc.), I figure i ought to find a way to more easily meet my calorie needs using only vegetables and fruits and such.

Couldn’t the fiber problem be solved with supplements?

Sorry if it seemed like I was just whining about having to eat vegetables, that’s really not it. I do try my best.

Juiceing is great, I used to juice all the time until my juicer broke … the only draw back to juicing that I see is that it take a lot more veggies to make a full glass of juice … I would use 10lbs of carrots a week and that can start to add up… carrot apple beat juice was a good one that I like and I also would add little ginger to most of the drinks. Here is a site that will have all the good stuff of each veggie http://www.juicingbook.com/ . The issue with V8 is that its not fresh, veggie juice needs to be drank quickly or is will start to lose some of the goodness.

When you juice you take out the fiber and get the full load of the sugar from the vegetable head on! No way around that one from what I can see.

I don’t eat vegetables with to get its calories. I eat them for their fiber and anti-oxidants. I guess I’m one of the luckier ones that actually love to chew the good ole vegetable. Love the fiber! IMHO, juicing is such as waste of the vegetable. I don’t waste my veges. Heck, I even skin the thick part of my broccoli and eat them. Yum!

I hate eating vegetables too, so I use a food chopper, and make a puree out of my veggies. Then I eat them with a spoon; Not too much chewing involved. Add a little salt, or your favorite seasoning, and it can be tolerable.

V8 is garbage. The drink undergoes pasteurization which destroys vitamins and phytonutirents. Second of all, it contains a load of booth naturally occurring and added sugar which if consumed in large amounts frequently at any other time than during and after exercise is detrimental to optimum body composition.

If you?re going to juice I would recommend that no more than 30% of your juice be sourced from high sugar containing vegetables such as carrots and beets.

Another option which offers a very high percentage of the benefits of juicing at a fraction of the time cost (this becomes a big issue if you?re juicing regularly) is to consume a drink made from dehydrated grass powders. I recommend Perfect Food from Garden of Life.

I was thinking the same thing. If you timed your juicing immediately PWO, would that help any? Otherwise I would have to pass on the juicer. Besides, the guy that used to hock them in the infomercials freaks me out.
