Vegetable Juices

Quick question:

What is your opinion on the vegetable juices found at grocery shelves everywhere?

Someimtes i dont feel like boiling, grilling etc my veggies due to laziness or the lack of time. I currently dont have any greens supps, so can i just drink something like V8 along with my meats, and consider it a qaulity meal? Or are the juices like V8 low grade?

Thanks

I would tend to believe that they are a decent alternative, say if you are too busy or on the road its an easy way to at least get some vegetables in your diet, though watch the sodium, i tiny 150ml can has 400mg of sodium. I wouldnt recommend it over real vegetables but i dont believe it will hurt once in a while to have V8 instead of vegetables.

I broke down and got a juicer.

Throw in my veggies and chug. I got Jack Lelanne’s.

Only problem is that vegetables don’t come out very tasty in juice, but supposedly its better to juice your veggies and eat your fruit.

I like to use fruit in it to make syrups for my protein pancakes.

Throw berries in the juicer juice and mix pulp into cottage cheese. Throw cottage cheese on pancakes or flax waffles and top with remaining juice.

I too am going to be getting a juicer anytime now.

I love your point on eating fruits and drinking veggies. I just dont like eating veggies anymore. They arent tasty enough. Gluping them in juice form is not only more convinent time wise but also taste wise.

I still love eating the berries and other fruits though.

Good question. I agree that anything processed is not as good as the whole food, but we are no longer hunters and gatherers either. Besides the sodium, remember that V8 is pasteurized. This means most vitamins and minerals will remain but manu enzymes and phytochemicals are destroyed.

Also I noticed you said you boil your veggies. You are basically pasteurizing them just like the V8. Try just steaming them (not submersed in boiling water) until they are edible. There are certain foods that actually have a better bioavailability when boiled, but for the majority of cases it’s not recommended.

I would rather get a vitamix blender as you can make an awsome juice with all of the fiber of your vegtables and fruits. Juicers strip the fiber from the vegtables and fruit in the process. Just look into it. Vitamix is the best blender you can get. I’m getting one soon but for now use a regular blender to make fruit/vegtable shake in the morning.

Two suggestions:

  1. Throw a jalepeno in with your veggies. That makes some damn good juice! You might want to start with half a jalepeno at first.

  2. Nobody says you can’t do veggies and fruits in the same juice. Throw some yummy fruit in with your veggies.
