One of my favorite quotes in that came from Mike Tuchscherer. He was always the recipient of dumb comments like that, and someone asked him if they bothered him. He replied “If I got bothered by comments like that, I wouldn’t weigh 265lbs.”
I typically try to deadpan my response, “I tried the gym once or twice, just wasn’t for me.” usually gets a side eye and a quick up and down from whoever the comedian is, ha.
For people who actually have celiac disease, 5 grams can absolutely be a problem. Most people with “gluten sensitivity” are just making up stuff because they want to be special. My brother in law has medically diagnosed celiac disease and has horrible problems from even trace amounts of flour.
It’s funny you say that (in figurative sense), because all the people I’ve met who avoid gluten can eat it and never have to rush to the bathroom. They appear to be just fine but claim it bothers them.
Rushing to the bathroom is not the only sign of gluten sensitivity. I’m writing from memory so don;t take any of this as gospel - in other words I am talking out my ass because my mouth knows better, lol.
I have issues with gluten and dairy, and they don’t show up as rushing to the bathroom or some other catastrophic event. I just know that I feel better when I eliminate or minimize them.
Inflammation is the issue as I understand it, and it can just be low level. For most people, minor inflammation isn’t a big issue, but as you get older, it becomes more about maximizing your quality of life because the little things become more and more problematic.
I do think some people make it out to be a bigger deal than it is. I mean, I consider myself mostly vegetarian, avoid dairy and gluten, but once in a while, I pound down a big ass cheeseburger. I feel a little shitty the next day, but I sure AF enjoy it when I eat it.
I was having a conversation with an MD the other day who specialises in female hormone issues. His first advice, almost to every single patient, is to avoid grains at all cost, including gluten, rice and corn. He explained that grains are now so refined, they cause havoc to most immune systems. Interestingly, grains in some parts of Europe are less refined and much user friendly.
I had read wheat belly a few years back and tried gluten free for a little while. I had slowly reintroduced it. These days I only have gluten once or twice a week max. I’m definitely don’t have issues when eating gluten, but I suppose I avoid it to support my partner ( has gluten issues) and for the potential benefits of reduced inflammation etc.
