The Dorian Yates Thread

That video with Yates and Cormier is awesome hahaha. I think Dorian will always be my all time favorite, not just because of his physique. He had a certain way of carrying himself that made him dominate the stage. Someone said epic and intense, I agree, those words are quite fitting.

And yea, he had a pretty sharp head on his shoulders too.

Yeah, Cormier is one of my favs, so I threw it in there…

Here’s a photo shoot (looks like it’s in Yates’ gym) from '93.

Is there somewhere I can see the details of his different splits, other than the one in his blood and guts video?

Thanks.[/quote]

I read “A Warrior’s Story”. It shows how his training evolved and Yates his background. The book is well worth your money. It is one of the best books on training I have read.

Cheers, and to Brick too for pointing this out.

I will definitely get a copy as soon as I have the money.

Just for information:
Thats some mass he’s added!

This thread turned a lazy Sunday morning, into an awesome lazy Sunday morning.

Thanks guys, this is what this board should be full of…

Dorian Yates arm workout from M&F March 93"( I have the mag in front of me) Ghost writer?, who knows, take this with a grain of salt I guess.

  1. One arm concentration curl…2-3 sets, 6-10 reps(warm-up)…1 set(heavy) 6-10 reps

  2. One-arm dumbbell preacher curl…1 set, 6-10 reps.

  3. Barbell curl…1 set, 6-10 reps. E-Z or straight bar.

  4. Alternating dumbell curl…1 set, 6-10 reps.

  5. One-arm hammer curl…1 set, 6-10 reps.

Weider Principles:

Decending sets, overload principle, forced reps(not often), peak contraction.

Always keeps a training journal and food log…always.

Weight @ Mr.O, 242 lbs.350 grams of protein a day, 450-550 grams of carbs a day. He stated that you don’t have to go overboard on supps in order to get good results…keep it basic and simple.

At the time of printing he was at Temple gym.

Going through these old mags is hilarious. Holy fucking pastel colors Batman!.

I still have all of the Flex issues that covered Dorian’s Olympia wins, and of course they’re all on hand now as I do my own prep. While perusing the coverage of the '95 rendition this morning, I found this gem:

“This has to be my sweetest win. I wanted to prove what I was all about: that I will fight to the limits of my ability to overcome any problem presented to me. My attitude was that I was going to war. My mindset was that these guys were trying to take something away from me and my family.”

Damn I love this guy! -lol.

I think anyone who has made a ton of progress has that mindset of going to war.

That mental state is greatly lacking lately…especially here. I get the feeling it has been replaced with “let’s have fun!!!”.

85 95

I haven’t seen this yet (and it’s not “technically” a Dorian training video) but considering it’s basically Yates training Dugdale the entire video it’s something I really want to check out.

beggining

The fact is that if he didn’t win, then something would be withheld from his him and his family, considering that’s how Dorian earned his living.

But what do professionals who do this for a living have to offer us in terms of advice? Afta all, dey all be juiced ta da gills and be genetik freekz!

I always used to think that that was the attitude of every male (competitive mind-frame), like a jealous, thirst for being the best. That is, until I got older and got to know more people.

I guess one big factor is being raised with 4 brothers - we were all very competitive.

Dude, ambition is warranted for a few men in a few positions. Ambition is completely uncalled for in many people’s situations.

If everyone was super ambitious and opportunistic, our world would cease to function and it would be ridiculous! Someone has to serve my coffee, stack orange crates, clean toilets, and dig ditches.

unfucking real…I’m following one of his routines with a bit of individualization of course. He has influenced my training a lot though.

You know, fuck that.

I just got back from my back workout today (I started this thread to get psyched up for today, plus Dorian is awesome and a favorite), but you know what? I didn’t have “fun”. I feel like I got my ass kicked. I almost puked after my kroc rows today. At one point, the gym employee asked me if I was OK because I had walked out into an open hall (outside in 5 degree weather) huffing and trying to catch my breath.

It wasn’t fun. It was mandatory. In a couple months I will look back and say it was progress. But, it wasn’t fun. “Fun” is when I play “Wii Tennis” with my 7 year old, not when I feel like my lats are going to fall off.

I’ll concede that I do get some kind of sick enjoyment out of it, but only after it’s over…

I agree, wouldn’t want to live in a world like that (laid back people are needed too lol).

Wouldn’t describe myself like that in all aspects of life…more-so the things I put my mind to.
