Wastelands was awesome but I’m partial to Drawing of the Three as my favorite … I like the way the doors between worlds was introduced and how they were used. Plus the introduction of Eddie and Detta/Odetta was always great character development to me. Plus the lobstrosities hackin off part of Roland’s hand and foot

I wouldn’t mind Javier Bardem given his acting credentials. I saw an actress they were considering for Detta/Odetta/Susannah (I forget her name) who looks the part (don’t know if she can act though). I also saw they were considering a white actress for her and I nearly threw my monitor to the ground out of rage…

Regardless the scope of this project is bananas … I’m confident that Ron Howard will do a good job … I always liked Opie Cunningham
Polo have to agree the first two books were my favorite also. I always envisioned her as Susannah.
Holy shit that’s her to a tee!!

A white chick couldn’t play the part. That’d be… just wierd.

So no Justin Beaver playing Jake? And what about Oy? Some CGI monstrosity?

Jake is an interesting part, is a main central character of the early part of the story. I am curious who and at what age they will try to fit this chracter. I would hate to see them try to put a 20 year old kid to play a 14 year old.

Oy would definately have to be CGI, combo opossum/dog thing I just dont see any other way.

^ Though I do think it’s smart to use someone a bit older to play a certain age. Like a 10 year-old in a script works better if not actually played by a 10 year-old, but maybe 13.

DJHT how did you feel about the ending to the whole Dark Tower series? I liked it, but many did not.

I loved it, but I also do not like bullshit happy endings. I thought it was perfect on the ending. Now I did think King got a little of course with the introduction of himself etc.

But I have been reading him since the early 80’s so I will give him a pass.

Yeah, the ending worked for me great.

SPOILERS!

I like that there was hope in that the 7 books we read were likely the second to last iteration of his long long story and that in the next iteration of the tale then Roland would get everything ‘right’ and he would be done.

While I could see that in my minds eye, I really dont see King closing this story. Maybe its just me but I have a feeling this is all we get.

That is the overall theme of the story IT WILL NEVER END. He will continue to do this for eternity.

That’s what I got. Roland, and in effect his ka-tet, has done this countless times, and will continue to do so. I liked it, I think it’s the only way it could have ‘ended.’

IMO, with how it ended and restarted. There is a chance of it finishing. There is no telling how many more times they will go through it or have gone through it. But with each time it restarts, I think something changes and he gains a bit of clarity. I also think, if he had his choice knowing the outcome, he would continue…

I remember reading this very very long ago when I was a book kid. But I dont remember anything from the story. I probably didnt even understood it completely anyway.

I agree to a point, however when he came to that realization in the Tower and he sees all the countless items he had collected on his travels trough this “Ground Hog Day” hell, it felt endless to me.

It took what over 30 years from King’s orginal short story to final book? I think I remember he had the inspiration from Clint Eastwoods the good, the bad and the ugly. He had started the concept and then put it in a draw for like 10 years.

I just think King is done with it and any attempt to resurrect an alternate ending would lessen the overall epic type nature of the story.

So why cant you go back and read it now?

DJHT, I’ve been reading that he’s working on a new Dark Tower book …

King’s not done with it…

Thanks Polo for kicking me in the mental balls.

Here I go into this whole opinion thing and you shoot it down like the cool cat you are.

And where did you read this? I would love to read this also. Hopefully you are not playing with my emotions.

I’ve read it other places too, but it’s down near the bottom of the page

I didn’t think it was a new dark tower book, but rather a book between four and five that will fill some gaps. I believe King is done with the the story.

I finally just finished the book 7 last week and started reading the graphic novels by Marvel now.

Spoiler alert

I like the ending of Roland going into the Tower and then it just ending right there. His whole quest was to get to the tower and he did that. It leaves the rest up to the readers imagination. I didn’t like the extra ending with Susannah meeting up with Eddie and Jake from a different world where they didn’t know her. That part seemed forced and made to be happy. He should have just left it at her going through the door and just being gone.

Also, what was up with the “fight” between Mordred and Roland. Seemed like a waste of a character to have him follow Roland through the end of his whole quest and then die just like that. I would have like to see some final showdown between Flagg and Roland.

Stephen King’s tv movies ALWAYS suck. Luckily, they are finally giving his movies the direction and scope they deserve because the last few movie attempts have been spot on. If you haven’t seen The Mist, watch it. It is possibly the best collaboration of his between author, director and script writer.
M-O-O-N, that spells suck.

The Mist was a fantastic adaptation, even down to the actors; Thomas Jane nailed it, Marcia Gay Harden nailed it (I actually wanted to slap her myself she was so infuriatingly good at playing the stirring psycho-priest) actually … all of them nailed it. Such a beautifully simple story as well with a typically ruthless S. King ending. Worth multiple viewings in my opinion.

Would also vote Timmy Oliphant for the Dark Tower. He has the grit and the grimace.

edit and bonk for not reading the whole thread - Javier Bardem ain’t a bad choice either!

I’m excited about the prospect of these coming to film and TV, but I have trouble imagining the series being done justice. I recently finished it, took me just a few months to plow through all 7, and I was blown away. I think “The Wastelands” was my favorite, but they were all fantastic. And I did like the ending. A happy resolution wouldn’t have been fitting, and I don’t think a good resolution could have been made.

Regarding the potential for Roland to finish his quest: Maybe? I don’t know. I’m drawing a blank here, but I thought that in another of his books, a “King Roland” was mentioned. Maybe I just made it up.

It seems that Javier Bardem has been offered the role (http://www.darktowermovies.com/). I thought I read somewhere that Viggo Mortenson was considered for it, but maybe not.

King Roland is a character from King’s “The eyes of the dragon” book. Another good read, not nearly as long or as intense as The Dark Tower series. Comparatively it’s a quick read and well worth it. I actually only started to read it because it had King Roland in it.

A few months back Stephen King announced he was embarking on a new Dark Tower novel, but that heâ??d probably only start writing in summer 2010. Well, it looks like heâ??s been a busy guy as an announcement was made on his official website yesterday that heâ??d now finished writing the book!

In a letter to fans, King writes that the story takes place between the time when Roland Deschain and his ka-tet leave the Emerald City (Wizard and Glass) and when we pick them up again on the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis, at the beginning of Wolves of the Calla. This new story wonâ??t add anything major to the story arc we already know, but will provide us with more depth and knowledge of past and present Mid-World.

I, like any ardent DT fan, am eager to hear more about the Gunslingerâ??s journey, especially anything related to his past life and the world he lives in â?? of course, all this extra detail wonâ??t hurt Ron Howardâ??s filmic journey to the Dark Tower.

Kingâ??s original working title was The Wind through the Keyhole, and this has been retained for the final release. Dark Tower 4.5 is due in 2012.
