Your bracing definitely cost you. It’s hard to think when you’re lifting close to your max so if anything isn’t automatic it’ll often get forgotten. With more practice on technique you’ll nail it.
Thanks Hamster.
It is probably a bit of both, but my main concern is, that this 115 felt much worse than 132 did 3 month ago. Ahh well I’ll start to admit that I’m not that young anymore.
@simo74 reviewing it seems a little bit closer, I’ll try widen the stance.
@I_Luc I have tried and tried to sit back but I just can’t get i right. I’m not doing many 1RM’s last time was just after new year, since then the heaviest was a couple of single at 112,5 kg. I’m dropping to a nice low percentage after this week starting some 531 BBB with some BB stuff after.
@MarkKO Yes it did, and that was the one thing I thought I had started to get the feel to.
Damnit I’ll keep practicing, one day though one day.
Reviewing the new year squat and this one, this was much closer to parallel than 3 month ago. I’m gonna stop complaining and get the work done ![]()
Performance/Readiness to hit a max is kind of finicky state. At any given time if your ability to lift max weights isn’t at its peak doesn’t really mean much. Definitely doesn’t really speak much to your progress tbh lots of factors about
Yeah mort don’t feel too bad, I’m waaay younger than you and yet you’re lifting heavier weights lol
Because u don’t sleep enough cuz
If this is difficult for you @mortdk, I think box squats are worth your time.
Also this. Everyone was right about bracing and I agree with wider stance + knees out more but I think this point ist important too.
Way to find something positive, Mort! It’s really tough to compare your old PRs with new ones if you changed depth or technique.
I can remember a time where I was squatting 365 for reps, but it was a high squat. I learned how to squat deeper and I just started ignoring my old numbers. They were no longer applicable and it was like comparing apples to oranges.
Do you have the 5/3/1 Forever book? If so, have you considered doing BBS instead? I think it would be a better idea- you’ll use heavier weights relative to BBB and so get good practice.
Have been hovering around 79,5 - 80 kg the last couple of days
Eating around 2100 calories each day with about 180 grams of protein.
Have been working a lot afternoons and late night. With some overtime.
Training wise I tried to max out on bench and deadllift today.
Planned to hit 105 kg bench, worked up to 92,5 kg, and it was freaking heavy so called it.
Then DL worked up to 140 kg, was okay sort of fine, plan was to hit 175 kg and take it from there.
loaded 160 kg and the danm bar was glued to the floor.
total bummer this week.
Well a new week and phase starts this monday.
I’ll be doing BBB 531 variation combined with some BB style assistance.
Nice low TM lots of reps for a couple of cycles. Trying to focus on MMC.
But as @Frank_C I’ve found that I don’t pack on muscles very well. We shall see. I’ll try.
@magick I don’t have the forever book, but I think 10 sets would take way to long. Maybe SSL 5x5 I’ll figure it out as I go. I’m thinking about 5x5 FSL.
You could do 5x5 Second Set Last (SSL) for some more strength work. That’s what I’d do. I don’t like the 5x5 FSL if it’s just for junk volume.
Magick did say it, but for the next phase I’m going to BB the upper body, Get stronger on DL and practice my squat some more. And I think SSL would be to much, maybe a pyramid approach.
Well, BB work is about time under tension and fatigue. Are you going to satisfy those requirements with the loads used for 5x5 on FSL? I guess you’re going to get to slow down your reps and feel the burn with some slow eccentrics. ![]()
Sounds good. MMC takes some humbleness, but it’s a game changer. Have fun with the BBing phase. Dont hold on so tightly to progression or certain movements.
That sucks man. I’m sorry the peak didn’t work out well for you. I don’t doubt you’ve gotten stronger though; seems like extra stress, overtime and weight loss just tipped the scales a bit against you.
Really appreciated following your journey on this last program - and looking forward to what happens in the next one.
I wouldn’t discount adding muscle with a good BB program. I’ll admit that I’ve been a beginner to BB work, so many of my gains are newbie. But at 51, I am thrilled with the muscle I’ve gained so far (and on a modest calorie deficit for the past two months as well). I’m especially happy about changes in the areas that I was targeting (mostly “Hollywood” muscle: traps, lats, biceps, delts). My wife has taken major positive notice of my improving physique, whereas late last year when I was making major strength gains, she just kept telling me how skinny I looked.
There was a great thread started the other day that, essentially, was about right-sizing goals. I know I’ve been doing some of that this year, trying to make sure my weight training goals remain in sync with my original goal: to be a stronger, more athletic jiu-jitsu artist who looks like he lifts weights. As long as your training is on track to deliver what you want, you’ll be in great shape, I think.
It happens. A real bummer but im sure ur gonna take the lessons learnt and move forward.
Woke at 79,1 kg - 174,4 lbs
yesterdays calories: 2250: 194C, 171P, 78F
Well shit happens, a lot of factors in here probably.
If I ever do anything like this again, I’ll do a deload week, then follow the SGSS final 2 weeks.
Now I’m going to find my old rep pr scheme.
531 it is.
I wouldn’t worry about not hitting a PR mate. Your training has been very consistent and you are getting better every week. You’ve lost a fair bit of weight, which will have had an impact. You also haven’t trained with heavy weight low reps a great deal lately. Forget the PRs for a while and focus on packing on some muscle with some heavy volume work and higher protien. Then switch to an Intensity block later in the year and smash those pr’s.
Welcome back to the dark side?
Always a bummer when you can’t perform up to your expectations and match old accomplishments. Don’t let it get to your head man. Bad days and weeks happen. As Simo said, you’ll smash those PRs later!
