I was going to say something but it’s just not worth it. Wayne has never even gone multi-platinum before as far as I know (just searched the RIAA database).

He isn’t the biggest name in hip-hop right now, let alone EVER.

haha alright i’m done debating. this argument is completely opinion based and biased (generation gaps). to me lil wayne is the best rapper alive and to you guys he isn’t. if you don’t like him thats up to you, but you can not say the man sucks and is 90% trash because the majority of the rap listening population would gladly disagree.

actually im pretty sure we’re around the same age im 20, not knocking him hell i preordered the carter 3 i just think that too say he is the greatest rapper alive is reaching, hell id have him in my top 20 last real dope line he had that i can remember off my head was “all my kicks fly like lu kang”

you say that the 90% of hip hop listeners would disagree, thats a fair statement because the majority of hip hop listeners just listen to what mtv and the radio feeds them, they havent been exposed too alot of other artists.

Also alot of people follow a sheep mentality go with the rest of the herd… [/quote]

yup…then he follows up that decent lu kang line with something about ‘poop stains’. I don’t think even 90% of hip hop listeners would disagree, with the opinion that wayne’s not that good. You look at something like hiphopdx and the tracks they post from him get like 20 fan boys, and 80 people hating it.

dude, be real whos more popular right now than Lil Wayne? snoop is nothing, dr dre hasnt done anything in like 5 fuckin years, jay-z isnt hotter than wayne and if he does a new track hes gonna have Wayne on it, eminem…are you serious? with that list all credibility is lost for saying whos the most biggest name in rap right now.

im not even a diehard fanboy of him either, dude is alright he makes some funny stuff but im not out here trying to deend him to the death.im just sayin, hes huge right now wasnt he recently voted man of the year too? barack obama wasnt even voted man of the year.

oh and Misunderstood is fire

Wow… LiveFromThe781, your lack of ability to differentiate between quality and popularity is really incredible. Same for most of the other posters. Yeah, he’s popular… And? So was MC Hammer; does that make MC Hammer a good MC?

Lil Wayne sucks on most levels as a musician. He’s being hyped up by the media and some fanboys so he’s kind of mainstream (not really though), but his music is ass. Don’t be a sheep, go listen to something worth listening to.

Actually, it’s been almost 10 years since 2001 came out, but that doesn’t matter. Dre can wait that long to put out albums and still stay relevant. People have been eagerly awaiting Detox for years now. Every rapper wants a guest spot on Detox. The Chronic is constantly referred to as one the greatest rap albums ever. Dre brought countless artists to the forefront. He has hand in hip hop for as long as Lil Wayne has been alive.

I know Wayne is hot right now and that makes him popular, but he’s not near the giant people make him out to be. He has some hits and some listen-able tracks, but nothing near a classic. I can’t imagine him still being relevant 10 years from now.

LIL WAYNE GHOSTWROTE FOR DRE ON THE DETOX ALBUM!!!

AND HE GHOSTWROTE FOR SCARFACE’S UPCOMING ALBUM

Lil Wayne is a genius in some of his songs

Where’d you hear that? Not trying to jump on the Wayne bashing thread cuz I’m actually a huge fan, and come on… there is no one better right this minute and you all know it.

i like wayne, and i’m not gonna get into all the hate, but some of the songs on the carter 3 fucking blow. what the fuck were him and banner thinking on “la la”? some of the beats are annoying. even “a milli”, which gets ruined by the loop in the background. jmo.

ok let me point out this fact, ill use my mum, she hates raps and doesnt follow rap in the slightest, my mum knows who dr dre, snoop, jay-z even diddy and 50 is…i think the fact a 52 white suburban mum in australia knows who these people are and doesnt know who lil wayne is illustrates my point perfectly…

You said he had the “made more of a name for himself than any other rapper ever has”. That is just false. Like I said he has never even put out a multi-platinum album. He could not headline a tour and pack stadiums around the world.

Right now his name recognition around the world is lower than all the artists jtg987 mentioned. Even if you’re only talking about rappers that are “active” right now, Kanye West and 50 cent both have higher name recognition worldwide. But even if Carter III is a huge hit and he becomes more popular than them right now, he has a long, long, long way to be considered the biggest name in rap ever.

I’m not hatin on Wayne or sayin he’s garbage. I like Wayne, and he is hot as fuck right now. But right now there’s so much hate from one side, that the other side tries to compensate by making ridiculous claims about him being the “biggest name in rap ever” or the “best rapper alive”. No need to exaggerate.

Has there ever been another rapper the consistently struggles to go platinum (usually only goes gold) whose fans gassed him up to be the biggest name in hip-hop ever?

Tha Block is Hot is a multi platinum album. Tha Carter, and Tha Carter II are platinum, Lights Out also went platinum.

Check yourself, saying he has a hard time making it platinum. Cause that’s bullshit.

Check yourself…I just looked at the RIAA database. According to that Block is Hot is 1x platinum, Lights Out and Tha Carter only went gold (Lights Out struggled…took 6 months to make it to gold). Tha Carter II took two months just to make it gold (TI went gold in a week on his last album), and 4 months to go platinum. That means it struggled to barely make it plat.

Artist Title Award Description
LIL WAYNE THE BLOCK IS HOT PLATINUM
LIL WAYNE LIGHTS OUT GOLD
LIL WAYNE 500 DEGREEZ GOLD
LIL WAYNE THA CARTER GOLD
LIL WAYNE THA CARTER II PLATINUM

I’m getting my information straight from the RIAA online database (riaa.com), the organization that certifies gold and platinum albums. Where you getting yours from? Show us your source or shut the fuck up Stanley.

you seem to be missing the point that im talking about present tense. like i said right now hes the hottest out and is the biggest name out right now. NO ONE is talking about snoop, dre, or fucking eminem? lmfao. they arent nothing right now, 5 years ago yea, but today? no way baby. and who cares if your mom knows someones name, what does that mean? i know who Elvis, i know who The Beatles are does that mean theyre hot right now? does that mean they have a huge following right now? no, it just means i know who they are.

lets keep in mind this dude has only been real big for what? 2 or 3 years? Carter was fire, really underrated, he still wasnt
“big” when that came out. then Carter 2 comes out and he starts poppin up on all the R&B songs and its like ok this guy is making a name for himself, hes starting to pop up more and more. Then he starts putting out 9,000 mixtapes and hes on everyones song, like you dont have a hit song unless you got him on it and if you do have him on it its not your song anymore. thats where waynes at right now, give him a couple more years and watch.

…how can you even say hes not known worldwide when theres a dude from australia on here talkin about him too?

liking the guy is purely opinion, you cant really argue it. his fame and popularity? thats just a fact and you cant hide it, for fucks sake he won man of the year, this supposed unheard of guy got man of the year, beat everybody on the planet but he aint shit. im still laughing about the dr dre, snoop, and eminem thing.

Yes…that is a wiki, meaning that anyone can edit it. I could go edit it right now and change all of the sales data to “100x Platinum” if I wanted to. I think I’ll trust the actual RIAA certification database over a publicly edited wiki.

BTW, even your wiki says: “It was on 1999 that Wayne decided to go solo releasing his debut album Tha Block is Hot which was Certified Platinum”.

You said biggest name “ever”, not present tense. Yes, he is very hot right now, but the “ever” part is not even debatable. All of those artists mentioned, including BIG, 2Pac, 50, Dre, Snoop, Em have all dropped individual albums that have sold more records than Wayne has in his entire solo career. Lil Wayne goes on tour in clubs. 50 Cent (as weak as his ass is) is the only rap star that can consistently fill out stadiums worldwide as a solo artist.

I think you’re trippin off of how many mixtapes and features dude has done and not off of actual numbers. Like you said give him a few years. Let’s see if Carter III pops off and where he goes from there but he isn’t the biggest name in hip-hop ever just yet.

What is this “man of the year” you keep talking about? Did all the citizens of the planet get together and vote on “man of the year” or is this some magazine award or something? Show us what you’re talking about.

Weezy is fucking awful.

Why are some of you trying to use popularity as a measure of quality? That’s like saying NO Xplode is awesome because everyone buys it, brah!
