Those are huge steps in the recovery process…and very easy to forget once you’re past them.

Well this weeks been a bummer to say the least. I’ve developed some sort of infection in my leg and it HURTS! My leg is pretty red from mid thigh all the way to my foot and I’ve got swollen lymph nodes in the groin area sort of by my hip flexor. Fevers been up to about 101 and I haven’t been able to work or train ugh.

Doc told me yesterday to rest and elevate and to not take pain meds to see what the fever did. Well that was miserable. I called this morning and requested either for them to see me or to write me some antibiotics. I want to get back to living again. This laying around stuff is for the birds.

The pain in the leg makes it really uncomfortable to even put the brace on so I’ve reverted back to crutches. Crazy how this just came out of no where. I was doing great until mid day Sunday and all of the sudden pain really spiked and fever kicked in.

Well not much going on here in regards to training but oh well. It’ll heal eventually.

That sucks, all the best with the recovery.

I’ve been back and forth with my docs PA and finally got a call from the doctor last night. He had both good and possibly bad news. Good news is that based on the pictures I sent him he doesn’t thing it’s an infection in the joint since I still have decent range of motion and can bear weight on it. Scary news is that he is worried enough to want to see it in person. He said that if the infection is in the joint rather than like a cellulitis or the like then it’s a medical emergency and we’ll be right back into surgery where he’ll have to flush out the infection and put a drain in that I would then have to flush daily with antibiotic solution for 6-8 weeks. Really really really hoping that I don’t have to go that route. My appt is tomorrow morning and will just try to ice and elevate as much as possible till then. I’m back at work today doing what I can but probably still won’t train until this thing gets sorted out.

Dang Jack, hoping it’s nothing!

How bad is the swelling? Is the swelling just in the skin or inside as in the muscles themselves? If it’s related to your surgery getting infected, please watch out for Compartment Syndrome. That’s a legitimate emergency.

Edit: sorry just read your latest comment. Yeah, please be vigilant next couple of days

Oh boy Jack sorry to read that, hope you’ll be back on track soon.
Best of luck at the doc.

Going in to see the doctor today. I feel like whatever this infection was that my body is slowly winning. The redness is smaller and less intense so that’s good. Edema is still pretty bad but hopefully that will resolve itself shortly soon too.

I’m going to ask the doc if I can take a foster IV to possibly help with the water retention in my leg. Not sure if that will even do anything but it came to mind.

I’m gonna rest through the end of the week and then God willing really get back into the swing of things training wise on Monday. Man I can’t wait to train and feel good doing it!

I’m feeling very relieved after talking to the doctor. The redness is smaller and he believes that the brace simply was too tight in places and in combination bruised me and caused some of the edema to compartmentalizations and fester. He’s recommendation was to only wear the brace when out and about. NO MORE BRACE AT THE HOUSE!

Really hoping that this is the last speed bump. Thanks for all the support guys!

Today’s PT
Quad flex with 3 second contraction - 5 minutes
Heel slides - just sliding foot on the floor and pulling towards my butt and back to straight. 5 minutes
Recumbent bike - resistance 1 RPM’s 55-60 - 12 minutes
Hack squat - 20lbs - 5 minutes
Pistol squat - 10 lbs - goal of 30 reps. Made like 15 before I decided the pain was probably too much.
Ice 10 minutes

Gonna give training upper body a go again tomorrow. Feeling like the hernia is much better and sessions should be more manageable.

Misc… had bloodwork taken on Friday. They are doing a full panel. Curious to see I’m my liver enzymes will be jacked up with all the Tylenol and ibuprofen I’ve been taking. Hopefully all looks good. Really looking forward to training tomorrow

Yesterday was the first full effort training session since surgery. For the most part it went pretty well. Had a little pinching and pulling in the abdomen but nothing to write home about.

Today is biceps and back. This is more of the session where I’ll have to be careful with the hernia repair. Think I’ll do more isolation and seated bicep exercises to minimize the strain on the abs.

Last night was the first night that I made it till morning without having to take anything for pain. I almost did but then wanted to see if I could just get up and going and work through the stiffness and pain. Jury is still out on whether or not that was a good idea… knees hurting pretty good at the moment.

On a non training note my wife and I have decided to begin each morning with a few chapters of scripture and a time of prayer together. It’s been really nice to start the day with the goal of bringing glory to our maker. It’s a little awkward at first praying together, but for those of you who are believers I’d encourage you to give it a try with your spouse.

Today’s training will be
4-6 back exercises and 4 bicep exercises. Don’t have a plan set out and will play it by ear. Just excited to be able to push hard again. Hopefully the body will cooperate.
