Chick at FAU, Teen shot while holding skittles, etc.
Both of these threads should be teaching us a lesson, but we won’t learn it. Instead of arguing over “is it racist” let’s discuss how to come together and stamp this nonsense out. Is racism fixable? It seems that it isn’t present in children, who haven’t learned the trait at least, as babies of all colors will happily play with one another.
What do we do? Can anything be done? Like Rodney King says “Why can’t we all just get along?”
Instead of posting in the other thread so much and bickering, explain what you think needs to be done…
My thoughts…
We need to all come together and call people out when they are treating others different without justification. We also need to stop the notion that only white people can be racist. Everyone can be a freaking racist. All of them need called out, and we should all back each other up when calling someone out. If you see it happening don’t just stand there in shock, say something (asking a lot since we have all seen videos of people dying on a street and others just walking by with IPHONE out recording). And, most importantly, don’t defend someone that is being racist just because they are the same color as you, and don’t hate another racist more than normal just because they aren’t the same color as you. Kinda defeats the point. Thoughts?
I love that show! Anybody who doesn’t know what that is from, Google Wonder Showzen. It is hilarious. As for the OP, I think things would improve if people did not jump on the race issue every chance they get. Racism is real and does occur and is horrible, but always assuming racism anytime two different races are involved with no real evidence doesn’t help matters, even if it turns out that race WAS the main reason.

That’s racist! I see that you are attempting to call Professor X out, because he’s black.

Racism is natural. It’s been called the green beard effect. Your replicators just don’t like people who look different. Pretty funny, right?
Honestly though, babies of a certain age don’t even know the difference between themselves and others. There is no sense of ‘self’ versus ‘other.’
So we dont like anybody who isn’t our twin?
Yeah, that is bullshit. If that were true, there would be a lot fewer interracial couples and we would all live in segregated neighborhoods and such. And, just speaking from my own personal experience that I do not dislike people simply based on how they look. It is usually about how much of a jackass they are.

That’s tolerant of you Doc … it’s always of how much of a jackass they are for me

When I lived in Mississippi and was hanging with college students I would just walked out of the room. I would mention the first time, politely, that I just did not care to hear racist comments. Usually, the hot girls would follow me out. In time it stopped around me.
Now, when I was working out in the field, I would call it out when I could. I was usually the only white guy at the job (manual labor) and I sometimes butted heads with the white company guys (at the temp assignment). There were times when my coworkers would suggest that we should eat out the parking lot when we would go get food, for my protection.
Some of my work took me into homes of some of the poorest of the state. I went to white homes and African-American homes. I worked mainly with a African-American guy. In one of the white homes I told the guy off (in a polite, Southern way) for the comments he was making. There were some African-American homes that I knew wanted no part of me present. But, as I mentioned in another thread, I had some moments with some that were tear inducing beautiful and skin color was not even a consideration.
Looking for the difference in people blinds you to all the similarities we share, and the kindness that is possible.

I have read all the comments in all three of the recent threads on this topic and this is by far the best statement anyone has made on the topic. There are way too many things we will miss out on if we dismiss people based solely on the color of their skin. I know I wouldn’t have my girlfriend, and she is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Agreed.

I didn’t want that to be taken too seriously. I’m not saying I don’t agree with it to a certain extent, but no offense meant to anybody.
That being said, genetic selection favors behavior condusive to its own propagation. It follows that organisms would be inclined to act more tolerably towards things which look like them, as physical appearance is indicative of a more similar set of genes. Darwinism for the win.
Well, that’s not really true. Children at only three months old have shown racial preference ( http://www.world-science.net/exclusives/060212_racefrm2.htm ). You feel safe around what you’ve been exposed to and what you’re exposed to gets locked-in very fast.
I’m using racism in the “race based hate” sense in the following few paragraphs.
My thoughts? I don’t think racism is something that should be “fought”. I find it interesting that society has moved to drop the racism, but keep the hatred, and one need not look any farther than every anti-racism video on youtube to see what I’m talking about. It’s the exact opposite of what should be done.
I think a better approach is to undermine racism and that can be done by simply not defining yourself by your race. I had no concept of race as a kid because I didn’t know I was a “white boy” and that lack of self-limitation has carried over to now, even though my brain is now physically developed enough to understand what race is. I’m not talking about being “colour blind”. That sort of thinking is retarded in my opinion. Intentionally avoiding the topic of race out of fear of offending someone by sheer virtue of reminding them of their race as though their race is akin to a giant tumour on their nose is more insulting than tolerant as far as I’m concerned.
I’m not saying deny that race exists, I’m saying don’t let its existence be a limitation for you. If you don’t carry race with you, how can you possibly adhere to racism?
