I think I might have posted this in another thread, but I wish cell phones had a voice annotation feature so that you could just talk into your phone and it will convert it to a text message and send it.

Really? I wish I had a phone that would just send my voice to the person I wanted to communicate with and they could hear it and then respond back in real time. Oh wait…

;D

hahaha…I realized when I wrote that that someone would point that out. :stuck_out_tongue:

You know what I mean though. When you’re someone that doesn’t like talking on the phone, but you’re driving and you’d rather send a text, then that would be a good feature to have.

This is the most amazing thing I have ever read.

I’m going to be a huge smartass and quip that you’re still talking on the phone when you’re telling the phone what to type.

Shoot me. Fuck.

Yes, because I clearly can’t talk and drive at the same time.

California says you can’t, but that’s obviously not the case.
I can’t wait until they start enforcing that more. In all seriousness, I can’t tell you how many almost accidents I get into on a weekly basis where the person is talking on the phone and not even looking ahead or checking their blind spots.

My friend is a cop and he’s given a few tickets for it so far. They all say they didn’t know about the new law when they are getting their ticket.

Everyone is supposed to be on a headset now, but they aren’t. I do have a headset that I use, but I rarely answer calls when I’m driving. When I’m driving, I just like to convey quick information that is more convenient to send via text like, “I’m on my way.” or “I’ll be there in 10 min.” I don’t need to call someone to tell them stuff like that, but I don’t like texting because I tend to take my eyes off the road too much.

I’ll agree with you to some extent there, but it really turns my stomach when I’m on my way to work in the morning and I see a “person” talking on their cell, eating breakfast, getting dressed, and putting on make-up while passing me going 85mph.

I also saw a “person” driving in the middle of a blizzard talking on a cell phone and eating a banana. Last time I checked most humans have no more than 2 hands.

Another time I was almost rear-ended by a semi when I was behind a Suburban that entered the interstate going 35mph in rush hour traffic. The “person” driving was talking on a cell phone laughing their ass off when I passed.

I could really go on and on here, but based off my personal experience, a good 80% of my close calls involve other drivers talking on cell phones.

Now, yesterday I was on my way to pick my GF up and in a place I was not familiar with. She tried calling twice but I knew I needed all my attention on the road. So I didn’t answer it.
In fact, I silenced it. I’ll even turn the radio down/off in parking lots or a place I’m not familiar with.

This holds true when your individual activities and their ramifications apply exclusively to you. As soon as other people become involved, I assert that they are justified in questioning your decisions. Traffic is one of the most inclusive everyday things that people interact with.

Another examples would be smoking indoors, playing loud music from your home, or other things that affect people around you. Cell phone interaction while driving most definitely fits into this category. Whether you are “skilled” or not is irrelevant … I think this is the argument that other posters made against you in less precise terms.

That is a good counter argument. At the same time, Anyone butting in on me using a phone better not be speeding at all. Or breaking any other law while driving. Somehow, I doubt that’s the case.

oh, and btw. Using a cell phone is MD is not illegal.

In NYS, it is illegal and the fines are heavy. But I don’t think the legality of it is in question here either. I can see your frustration regarding people who appear to be focused on the road but break other, more obvious traffic laws. Two wrongs don’t make it right, although I will definitely will not hesitate to pass someone in the left-hand lane on the right side going 45 on a cell phone.

You have to realize that most of these ‘fucktards’ are kids. I have yet to meet a kid that didn’t think whatever he/she does, thinks, says, (no matter how asinine), is brilliant.
Er, no offense to the fucktards.

Everyone always thinks that they’re not that person.

And it seams to me that the person texting is never aware of the accidents that don’t happen because of the drivers who are paying attention, not because the texter is so good at texting. These people are self absorbed, so they go along thinking that they aren’t the problem.

Thanks for the nod Christine. We would also probably agree that a high percentage of driving-while-texters would be teens and twenty-somethings. This is also the age of self absorbtion and general fucktardness. Yes?

Or it could be the age that the majority of texters fall into. I’d be willing to bet on average the older the population the less text messaging usage. It’s just a norm now.

And I guess by your logic, as soon as someone turns 30, they’re free from being a “fucktard”? Or do you happen to think that just because you’re probably older you seem to think younger people are lesser people.

Yep. Those who think they always do everything right.

Not to say that all teens and twenty-somethings are irresponsible. But there is a greater likelihood of this being the case.

i’m guilty of it aswell, however i generally wait til i’m at a redlight to reply

I’m to busy watching out for all the blue haired ladies and the gents with felt hats. I never worry about my driving or what I do when I’m driving. It’s all the other fuck’in asshole out there that I’m worried about. After all, it’s always someone else’s fault!

Not at all. I will, however, reiterate that younger folks are morein touch with ego. It is maturity and life experince that evokes regard for someone other than self. Actaully todlers are more self absorbed, but they cannot drive or text.
The fact that you are so intent on arguing with all opposition on texting while driving (becasue you are an excellent texter, driver, and have had a cell phone for 6 whole years) tells me that you have not yet reached that level of maturity.

Did you not read the part where even “I” won’t text or call someone?

If I’m going along a straight shot road that I am familiar with I don’t see the harm (more so than any other “normal” distraction), assuming I’m not taking both hands off the wheel.

Are you saying you never take your eyes off the road, ever?

In fact, I’d be willing to bet that I’m more aware of my surroundings than the majority of drivers. Am I saying I’m perfect? No.

But, I’ve dealt with many cars that were pieces of crap so I’m in the habit of constantly monitoring the vehicle (temp, oil pressure, etc) along with checking my mirrors a ton.

I normally play snake while I’m driving. Oh and drink beer.

Hell, out here in West LA traffic is so bad during rush hour you’re at a standstill 90% of the time.

Texting is a non-issue.

I just bring a laptop with me and look at porn while driving.

I think that’s what most the police in my town do. What else could be so damn interesting that they have to pull over for hours on end and stare at? They got Oprah on those things?

Totally agree.
