Hi.
I’ve been using tetracycline for some time now, due to acne.
I read somewhere that Tetracycline inhibits protein synthesis. Obviously this caught my attention. Does anyone know more about this?
Thanks.
Magnus

While it is true that tetracycline does inhibit protein synthesis, the important part is that this in in prokaryotic cells, ie bacteria. I have never heard of it having an effect on eukaryotic cells, our cells, so I looked around a little bit.
The most that I could really find was a little sentence that said basically at toxic levels it could inhibit protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. So basically this shouldn’t occur in a human as long as you are following the dosing instructions.
Anyway, no company would ever produce a drug that could shut off protein synthesis in a human. Our cells are constantly producing proteins and not just ones that are related to muscle. Basically shutting off protein synthesis in our bodies would be just as fatal to us as it would be to the bacteria which the antibiotic is designed to kill.
Sorry for the long winded explanation, and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Ah, the old Anabolic Reference Guide. I think the last version was published in '92.
During the 90’s I spread the news about the inhibitory effects of tetracycline as dogma. Then I took my first microbiology class. Oops.
Dammit, David! You’re the source of this misinformation?! ![]()
Thanks, a lot, jcb.
not a problem, glad i could help.
