Testosterone Writing Contest!

Here’s my attempt at breaking out of amateur writing and into something worthwhile:

What T-Nation means to me

This is not the story of a scrawny punk that put on muscle and suddenly earned the attention from the gorgeous women in his life. Neither is this the story of the overweight couch monkey that managed to drop half his bodyweight and run a marathon. This is the story of an everyday working stiff that needed a resource to help him become a better person.

I tend to lurk on the website, myself, and just absorb as much as I can from the articles and forums. The wealth of information is truly astonishing, and I can not imagine ever having enough time to read everything on it. Nonetheless, I have learned a considerable amount from it, putting it to good use in many ways to improve my performance, physique, and level of education.

The personal successes I can attribute to T-Nation are considerable. I have learned improved ways to train, eat, and rest. As important, I have also learned not to be too hard on myself. An unspoken rule I have picked up is understanding the line between self-discipline / dedication and obsession.

On a physical front, the variety of programs and offerings from different coaches have helped me blast through numerous plateaus. As an example, I had a world of trouble breaking 300 on the bench until I thought to do a simple search and found an article on Benching 600 pounds by Dave Tate. His advice on form and technique was invaluable in getting me beyond my stalling point. 600 may not be my next stepping stone, but if anyone could get me there, I imagine he could.

Setting new personal records is not the limit though; I have also rehabbed a minor shoulder impingement with the advice found on T-Nation regarding stretching and mobility. Of course, even more importantly is the time spent preventing future injuries, which multiple coaches on T-Nation stress. Not only do they encourage it, they also provide routines and suggestions on just how to accomplish it.

Concerned with getting bigger and stronger, T-Nation is a great place to seek out advice. One can only grow so big, however, before the eyes are not as happy with what they see in the mirror. To that end, T-Nation also provides ample help with a variety of advice, suggestions, and plans to aid in the reduction of unwanted body fat. Taking these things into account has helped me shed enough bodyfat in only a few weeks, taking me to the doorstep of my dreamed about goal of single digits, and I have both T-Nation and Dr. John Berardi?s Get Shredded Diet to thank for it.

T-Nation is filled with more than experts and good advice; however, it also markets its own brand of supplements to assist everyday normal people in their goals of becoming more than normal. The other area that T-Nation excels beyond mere programs or highly effective products designed with cutting edge biotechnology is in the member base. The members are real people; people with jobs, families, mortgages, deadbeat relatives, successes, and failures just like me. These members support each other, offering encouragement, suggestions, appreciation, and empathy.

The next time I have trouble breaking through to a new bench press, I just have to reread one of Dave Tate?s articles. The next time my arms are flagging, Dr. Elliot Darden or Charles Poliquin will unwittingly come to my rescue in their writings. When my fat loss stalls and I feel rundown, Dr. John Berardi will be there to help me figure out why. When I have overcomplicated my life and need to re-inject some common sense, here comes Dan John to the rescue. And for the host of other problems that occur, the other skilled, talented, and experienced contributors to T-Nation are always available as well through their past, present, and future articles.

one while i’m feeling saucy:

T-Nation: at least we’re not myspace

TC, can we submit two essays?

Maybe Vince McMahon put it the best when he said,
“There is a great deal of deference, a great deal of respect shown to one another, and a great deal of teamwork. There is also a lot of competitiveness and a lot of testosterone and estrogen, and that’s just wonderful.”

The differences shown on T-Nation are what make us better. Our differences let as learn from each other, and help us to point out our own mistakes. T-Nation is not limited in its knowledge by only catering to one group; rather the nation embraces bodybuilders, powerlifters, fitness competitors and mixed martial artists alike. For this we are all able to learn about each other?s interests and earn new respect for sports we formerly new nothing about.

Respect is one of two driving forces behind T-Nation?s success. It certainly isn?t the respect that the members show for each other, but the respect shown for the creators and contributors. Thousands of members show the highest form of respect for Biotest by buying the company?s products every day. Each time a new product is released we curse them because we just placed an order, or we now have to dip into our savings even more because we know the product is of the highest quality and we must purchase it. We trust Biotest with our body?s health and to me that is the highest form of respect. Nevertheless, this respect does not end with supplements, nor even start with them. Rather it all starts with the authors of the articles that we read and praise.

Everyone that belongs to this nation shows their respect for the authors and their works, either by just taking the time to read the words on the screen, or by following their tips, advice, or insights. We trust them to lead us down the path to success whether its muscle size, fat loss, increases in strength, health, or motivation. Trusting someone with helping ourselves to succeed is a profound show of respect for the person?s integrity and knowledge.

I have often in jest referred to T-Nation as a support group, which comes from the teamwork. People have often come to the brink of success or total failure and needed that one last nudge either to succeed beyond their mildest dreams or to find that renewed sense of hope to go back and give it their all. It?s at these times where T-Nation bands together and works as a team to give that person the needed help and inspiration. To those in need of that edge which only a team of help can provide, welcome home.

So what is that second driving force behind T-Nation?s success? Competition. Whether it is Biotest stomping out the other supplement companies, or a new member determined to show Professor X who really is the biggest man on a crotch rocket, it all comes back to competition. At T-Nation competition is not just something we thrive off, it?s something we live. Don?t understand what I mean by living competition? All you have to do is look at P22?s bodybuilding competition pictures, ask Dave Tate about how he became one of the strongest men in the world, or PM Dr. Berardi and ask him how nutrition can help you win that Gold Medal. Whether a man or a woman testosterone is something we live on and it breeds competition, so bring on the challenges because here at T-Nation we aren?t short on coming up with new challenges.

T-Nation is comprised of both men and woman, and with us comes a whole lot of testosterone and estrogen. Each sex brings new insights and endless inspiration, as we are both after the same pursuits. Whether these goals are increase muscle or looking good nekkid we come together, we bicker, we flat out disagree; but in the end, that is what makes it so great. We are able to bounce ideas off each other, and able to see new view points that only a one-gender site would lack. It is only together that T-Nation succeeds and keeps from becoming a one minded, misguided site.

As Vince McMahon concludes, “and that’s just wonderful.” T-Nation is a collection of ideas, beliefs, and knowledge that comes together and differs, but in the end makes all of us more powerful human beings and that’s just wonderful.

“How would you define Testosterone Nation?”

A place where I can indulge my interests and further my knowledge.

Testosterone Nation is a place that feels like home, a place where I can discuss my thoughts and read the thoughts of likeminded individuals.

It is a place where my passion for learning was rekindled. Where the ignorant and uneducated can save many wasted hours and wasted efforts by learning from the professional and amateur expert. It is a place where the misinformed can be guided and the old hand can be suprised with something new.

It is a window into a small subculture that could otherwise be unavailable to the reader. Where an individual in the remotest place can share thoughts with those in the middle of the action.

It is a place where the advice and support of many can be available at all hours of the day and where people are not afraid to be direct.

It is a place where the more one delves into the archives, the more the advice seems similar; there is no substitute for hard work.

Joe.

I don?t post much here at T-Nation?Ok, fine, so this is my first post, and I?ve been lurking here soaking up knowledge without offering anything in return for over four years now, but TC?s prompt has? err, prompted me into action. Maybe I?m finally inspired to give back to the community from whom I?ve learned so much, maybe I want to take advantage of the rights my non-Namibian forbears fought and died for, or maybe I?m just a greedy bastard, and five C-notes sound like a good reason to do something constructive with my keyboard. In any case, here goes:

Reading around this site, you will find that some will wax poetic about T-Nation?s representing an attitude?a spirit untamed and unbound by the strictures of society; a spirit possessed of a drive to perfect itself physically, yes, but also intellectually and spiritually; a spirit unafraid of its own animal nature, but underpinned by a strong and unwavering moral conscience.

False.

Ok, far be it from me to say that that point of view is just plain wrong, but here?s how I look at it: Sure, T-Nation is a place where people of that spirit gather to share ideas. But if we make a website the symbol of that spirit, what are we saying to ourselves? A major tenet of the T-man Creed, at least in my mind, is ?I will not succumb to living my life vicariously or electronically. Although I will not fear technology and will make whatever use of it I choose, it will not become my crutch. I will have no crutch.? Surely not T-Nation, but T-men themselves are the symbols of the spirit we glorify here.

So if T-Nation isn?t a symbol, what is it? The truth is that it may be different things to different people, but to the uninitiated it can always be one thing: a launching pad. It cannot provide the fire, the propulsive force to drive you toward greatness; that has to be inherent in you. What it can do is help you direct that fire.

I found T-Nation a scrawny, 130-pound college freshman. I always had a desire for athletic prowess, but it was not one of my genetic gifts. My athletic endeavors in high school had been directed almost entirely toward baseball. I spent hours with a pitching coach perfecting my mechanics, to the point that although I could barely bench press 95 pounds and was lucky to stand up with 135 across my back, I was throwing in the mid-eighties and compiled an ERA under one during my junior season. I was even looking at pitching at the college level. That was until I tore my rotator cuff, forcing me to sit through my senior season, and essentially dashing my hopes of playing college ball.

So there?s the spilt milk. But at this point I had to find some other avenue in which to pursue athletic achievement. I played intramural sports, but that level of competition isn?t much of a measuring stick, if you ask me. It occurred to me that weightlifting would give me a chance to compete against myself, to standardize my efforts and my progress. I started going to the gym every day, and I made some progress. Still, I was unsatisfied, because I knew I could train better if I trained smarter. So I did some research, and I stumbled upon what is now T-Nation. I read every article on the site, and the more I learned the more I wanted to know. T-Nation led me to Mel Siff?s Supertraining, Stuart McGill?s Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance, and a host of other gems. I can honestly say I spent more time researching things like why S6K1 phosphorylation occurs preferentially in Type II muscle fibers following resistance training than I ever did on my course work.

Of course, there comes a point, practically speaking, when the returns on this research begin to diminish. Does understanding the structure of insulin receptors really help me perform better in the gym, or out on the court, the mound, or the field? Probably not. At this point, my learning in those areas has evolved and expanded from an accumulation of practical knowledge to include purely intellectual (nerdy) endeavors. But, to borrow a thought from TC, the body is the vehicle for the brain. A Ferrari ain?t much if the driver?s a schmuck. And herein lies the real value of T-Nation. The answers it provided me led me to an exponentially increasing number of questions, windows to physical feats and realms of intellectual exploration I barely knew existed. The fun part, the challenge, has been finding the doors.

Whoa? deep.

Alright, congratulations to those still reading this; you made it through my biography and my pile of overwrought metaphors, and now you get the meat. If you?re looking for a quick fix, promise you?ll tell me when you find it, and I?ll promise never to hear from you again. But, if you?re looking for a great starting point or simply a stepping-stone on your quest to push the limits of human potential, you?ve found one. And because T-Nation is evolving right along with the men and women who populate it, you can step here as often as you want without ever walking in place. As for me, after over a year and a half of seriously rehabbing my shoulder, I finally felt confident enough a couple of months ago to throw on it again. I?ve been throwing pain-free since, and on Saturday I hit 91 on the gun. Now to figure out how to fly?

I’m hungry. Seriously. I’ve got two pounds of hamburger, Wal-Mart’s finest boxed beef, mind you, chilling in my fridge. My salads for the week are already packed neat-and-tidy in their little Gladware Resealables. My shakers are filled with milk, ready for Metabolic Drive, Grow! Whey, and that Spark drink mix.

I have my bottles of Aqua Fina Flavor Splash arranged in military formation. My Surge shakers are filled with 16 of ice water. My tuna, well, it stays sealed until I need to eat it, 'cuz that stuff gets to smelling like the big-time ho in the small-time town a-might quick.

Dang, excuse me, I need a snack.

Thats cool!

It is the dawn of Western Civilization. A crowd of men gather at sunrise around a dirt filled pit dug into the earth at Olympia. They are exchanging stories about ancient heroes and modern warriors, but all of their talk ceases as two naked men step into the pit. They are a sight to behold: well proportioned muscle covered by unblemished skin glistens with a light sweat. A small trace of gold dust sprinkled on their skin catches every bit of the early morning sun, its sparkle proudly shouting: WE ARE IMMORTAL. The two men stare at each other intently. One of them will leave this pit a hero. The other may not leave at all.

Fast forward a thousand years to the height of the greatest empire that the world has ever seen. Sixty thousand of its citizens have crammed themselves into the Flavian Amphitheatre in downtown Rome to be thrilled by the sights and smells of blood. Everyone in attendance, including the Emperor and the Senate, roar their excitement at the two men enter onto the blood stained floor. The men nod and hold up their weapons. The roar of the crowd is almost as exciting to them as what?s about to come. Blood will be spilled here, and someone may die. But it is worth it for the approval of the crowd, and for the chance to prove themselves here today.

Another Colliseum sits on another hill in another country, untold miles and years seperating it from Rome. Cameras mounted on blimps fly overhead and a crowd as large as its ancient counterpart roars in excitement as the two teams run out on to the field. Glory and fame are waiting to be won here today. These athletes are ready to take that prize.

Unknown to these athletes or the crowds in the stands is the fact that an even more grueling contest is taking place three blocks away. There, in a dank basement, a man screams in pain and excitement. His screams are drowned out by the sounds of heavy metal and the clanging of metal plates. He does not compete against a foe or rival; he is alone. His mind is filled with thoughts of the ancient Greek athletes, the Roman gladiators, the superstar ball players. He is the culmination of a millenial search by mankind for what truly makes us great; that hallmark of physical and spiritual perfection that can only be found through pain. That exalted state that can be found only when limits are pushed, when boundaries are broken. No one will ever see his achievements. No one will grant him a laurel wreath or a million dollar endorsement. But he does not care. He is an athlete. He is a warrior. He is Testosterone.

Since we could first walk upright, we have sought to see exactly how far the human body could be pushed, how much it could achieve. This led to the creation of every sport from boxing to soccer. But it also led to a certain mindset, a code or ethos that connects men to each other down through the centuries.

The Greeks called this force “dynamis,” very loosely translated as “the will to achieve.” The runner or jumper at Olympia displayed dynamis, as did the Spartans when they made their heroic stand at Thermopylae. This quality was essential to being not just a man, but a Man.

The will to do more, to achieve things never before possible, is what has always defined the male character. To the ancients it may have been some obscure force within, but today we recognize this will, drive, and agression as the hormone “testosterone.” To the men who cultivate this, who live with dynamis, it is no mere hormone. It is something much more.

This state of living is difficult to define. It’s not something that can be intellectualized and categorized easily. Vocabulary just doesn’t exist for it. It is less than thought and more than emotion. It is visceral, feral, barbaric. It is a beast chained within your breast, pulling against its chains to tear free, all the while screaming the question: “Do I rule you, or do you rule me?!?!”

Each man (and woman, for they have this beast as well) must answer this question for themselves. Does the beast rule you? Do you fly off the handle too easily or, coversely, are you lacking will and determination as you let your beast sleep? Or do you rule it, using it as fuel to do what has to be done? It is the answer to this question that defines us as Men.

And that is what we are here at T-Nation. We are beastmasters. We channel our inner animals, our rage, our sheer willpower and push ourselves to new horizons. Whether that horizon is breaking a World Record or simply a Personal Best doesn’t matter. We do it because we can. We do it because we must. And we do it because precious few others have what it takes to.

As the world sleeps idly by, we toil in hardship and anonimity. As others comfort themselves with gluttony, we eat what we must. As men all over take the time to relax and be comfortable, we put ourselves through tortures unimaginable. All of this in pursuit of nobility, honor, and perfection. This is dynamis. This is Testosterone. And I’m goddamned proud to be a part of it.

Testosterone Nation is for you - It’s for me - This is Our Nation

100% Testosterone Nation - Welcome to the new revolution…

This is no essay but I felt like I was missing something today, partly because its my rest day (no lifting). But now I know what it was. And I’m ok now. Are we going to vote on these T.C.? Because I love a challenge.

Christian Thibaudeau. TC Luoma. Dedication. Independence. Tough Love. Sense of identity. Close-knit community. My passion. My lifestyle. These are just some of the first things that rush through my mind when I hear Testosterone Nation mentioned. This weightlifting information resource is not just a place to go to for scooping up the next workout plan or nutritional guidelines. My name is Adam Belmont. And, this is my story.

If Testosterone Nation were to be an actual place, for me it would exist in a war bunker. A dimly lit world where one person after another shares his personal experience concerning weightlifting and perspectives on this world in which we live. Everyone has a different experience; everyone has a different perspective from which lessons are derived. Lessons not only about learning new and innovative exercises or how to build an individualized workout plan but also about how to benefit from life most fruitfully. Lessons that one learns through practical experience rather than solely absorbing them through fables. Lessons that are although unique to each individual, are brought together and shared within a supportive community.

An admirable quality of Testosterone Nation is that it holds different meanings for everyone involved. Just as no two people are identical, no two people visit this site for the same reason. Each one has his own motivation for staying on track with the latest fitness and nutrition research discussions.

Personally, there are various reasons as to why I follow Testosterone Nation religiously. The obvious ones being that I love lifting at the gym and immersing myself in the experience. This site allows me to learn and adapt new methods in which I may improve my present situation from others who share similar interests as me. It is very comforting to know that if I have any problems or questions, the eager readers of Testosterone Nation are here to listen and offer sound advice 24/7. Another reason as to why this site acts as an important influence in my life is that it gives me a great sense of pride to know that I am a part of a huge community full of innovation and a perpetual determination to strive for the best. This site is unusual in that most members know how to choose for themselves whether or not to believe something. Dogma is easily destroyed with the proper evidence and many people have an open-mind when someone introduces a new idea. Everyone has a unique quality to offer to the rest of us and that is really what makes Testosterone Nation so special.

My name is Adam Belmont. And, this is my story. What is yours?

TC,

I’m still putting the finishing touches on my article but I ahve a few questions.

Who’s judging this?

When will we kn ow who won?

Is there enough entries for a second place?

I WANNA WIN DAMNIT

It could help pay for the LA seminar.

Ferris gets my vote. Not that counts for anything.

T-Nation is a website representing a hardcore and intelligent approach to a healthy, strong lifestyle. While the myriads of people who use this site represent a spectrum of interests, beliefs and approaches, the core of the Nation is comprised of those who are dedicated, who hold themselves to a higher standard in life and who persevere and sacrifice in the pursuit of strength, muscularity, performance and health.

Despite this, the culture of the Nation is not represented by mindless hammering away at weights to get big and strong. While there may be plenty of humor on the Nation, irreverence to stuffy preconceptions and downright rudeness to outdated stereotypes, in the end, T-Nation is about results.

There are regular original articles here researched and written by the highly educated and the highly experienced. The hard core of regulars on T-Nation expect to be treated as intelligent adults who are dedicated enough to learn at least the basic science and rationale behind the programs, techniques and nutritional information provided by this site and the authors oblige them with detailed, well thought out pieces. T-Nation also provides a place for people to converse with these movers and shakers of the fitness world through the forums on the site. Those who frequent the Nation demand a high standard among themselves.

There is a vast amount of useful information here and a lot of advice from experienced peers for those who need it, but these will be expected to have the discipline to research first and frame questions intelligently.

T-Nation provides a place to shop for cutting edge nutritional supplements made by Biotest labs. Write-ups on each supplement, sometimes a hint on new products under development and plenty of discussion on the supplements with educated people involved with their formulation (this last an unparalled opportunity to have direct input into the formulation and reformulation of products with those who make the decisions) are all part of what T-Nation has to offer.

T-Nation is at its core a serious place for a serious pursuit, but there is plenty of room on the forums for connecting with those around the globe who share your drive to succeed in achieving the body you demand.

If you are truly passionate about your training lifestyle, if you are dedicated enough to set aside preconceptions and embrace new approaches in order to achieve your goals, step up to T-Nation.
