I will put my heart on display here because I mean what I have written. So, here goes…
T-Nation Essay:
?Dad, can you help me gain some muscle for high school??, AJ asked, somewhat with an uneasy tone to his voice. AJ was entering high school. The freshman-to-be wanted to put on some muscle in preparation for high school sports. He had a knack for baseball. Always had. AJ had made the All-Star teams each summer of his Little League years, all the way back to T-Ball and Coach-Pitch ball. His father had been at his side throughout those years. Now, with his son going into high school sports, he would have to back off, not be so much involved. With an equally uneasy voice, his father responded, ?Sure, I can help you with that?. The uneasiness in the father?s voice was due to the reality that he felt unworthy of undertaking this important task. His son?s future could be at stake here. Perhaps his son would benefit more from a personal trainer, someone who could work right along with his son, hands on, demonstrating proper exercise form, proper technique, sports specific training and proper nutrition.
This was my scenario. This is what I faced two years ago. The uneasiness on my part was not necessarily a lack of confidence but the reality that I had become so fat that I did not feel I had the credibility to tell my son how to improve his own body. I weighed an outrageous 345 lbs at 6 feet tall. Although I had been a football star back in the day, I found it difficult to hang on those glory days, they were, after all, buried under all that fat. I had to also admit that for the previous two years, my ability to work physically with my son, athletically, had diminished significantly and I was many times, sidelined and having to allow my son to be coached and taught by others. When he was much younger, my health wasn?t so bad and I could actually get down in the trenches with him, so to say.
My son?s baseball abilities were a serious matter. The high school coach had already contacted me about AJ. AJ stands a great chance of getting a scholarship to a good university the coach has said. And, who knows what the future holds, pro-ball, wow, I was blown away. Yet, here I was, so fat that I was physically unable to help push my son toward his future. It was at that point that I decided to look for a personal trainer and off to the internet I went. One site led to another and somehow I ended up at T-Nation.
I read, and I read and I read. And then I read some more. Post after post, thread after thread, I read. My edge some how seemed to have returned. My desire to get my own self back in shape took hold because T-Nation made it obvious to me that I could do that and along the way help my son put on those muscles he so badly wanted.
I tossed the personal trainer idea away and decided I would do this, not only for my son but for myself. I bought a membership at the YMCA. Slowly I began. Implementing ideas, workouts and philosophies from T-Nation. Slowly I began to improve. After about 6 months, I had the confidence to bring my son along to teach him the way of the iron, teach him the way of T-Nation, the way of self respect, the way of confidence and the way to more muscles.
To date, I have lost about 70 lbs. I have respectable numbers on my lifts. I have lost fat and gained muscle. I have a long way to go yet but I am well on that way, that T-Nation way. I have that T-Nation support, that T-Nation knowledge so unselfishly shared by every T-Nation member. That T-Nation confidence has now become that T-Nation swagger.
My son AJ, is now going to be a junior in high school. He has played varsity baseball the past 1 and ? years now (half his freshman year and his entire sophomore year). His overall body strength has improved significantly and I have been there with him every step of the way…
T-Nation has given me and my son all that and I am thankful to T-Nation for that.
But that is not all T-Nation has given me. Much more deeply, T-Nation has given me my life back. T-Nation has given me my son back. T-Nation is at the core of the renewed respect my son has for me. T-Nation has ensured that it is not only my son that has gained the muscle he so badly wanted and not only me who has gained muscle but T-Nation has ensured that the relationship that my son and I share has also grown stronger. T-Nation has put some serious muscle into that. My son and I lift together, we work on fundamental baseball skills together, we go through batting practices together and we laugh and we cry when necessary. T-Nation real. This is what T-Nation is to me. This is what T-Nation is about to me. The testosterone that runs in my blood through my veins is the same testosterone that now runs through my son?s veins, T-Nation inspired testosterone, and its all real.
