Testosterone Testing

im getting my test levels checked because i’m having routine blood work done so i figured what the hell… also i have a variocele on one of ‘my boys’ so that could be a factor. i’ve heard that you cant really tell much from just check “Total Testosterone” and im pretty sure its “Free Testosterone” that is really the only one that matters.

SO… i’m looking at my copy of the paper right now and im not 100% sure i have the right stuff checked off so that i can get an accurate measure of my test levels.

what is checked off is the following: “TESTOSTERONE, TOTAL” and “TSH W/REFLEX T-4, FREE”.

there are other boxes in the same section that read “T-3, TOTAL”, “T-3, UPTAKE”, “T-4(THYROXINE), TOTAL” and “T-4(THYROXINE), FREE”.

i have no idea what any of this means, so any help is really appreciated.

First of all these test will not tell valuable information and waste of time and blood. This is why people fall through the cracks and end up years chasing their tails not getting better because improper test are not ran upfront T-3 uptake is useless. SOunds to me like you have a quest form. Free testosteroe is not an accurate for but rather bio T which is total testosterone, albumin and shbg calculated in a forumula. Just get shbg and total testosterone then we can calibrate from there

Check off ferritin, b-12, folate serum, CBC,CMP with liver diffss, dhea-s, lipid profile, ha1c

diagnostic codes 780.91, 244.90, 255.0

Down at the bottom of paper there are comments or additional test that you can add in ones that are not on the labs slp

Shbg
free t3
bio testoserone
estrodial 4021x (13-54)
reverse t3
Dhea-s
Cortisol am and free
vitamin D 25 oh
prolactin
dht
progesterone
cortisol

whoa thanks for the thorough response… the only thing is my insurance sucks and will only pay for certain tests. the ‘extra’ tests that i want to do will have to come out of pocket and im a little low on cash. you’re right though, it is a quest form. do these tend to be expensive for the extra tests?

EDIT: i went to the urologist today and i dont have a varicocele. im only 19 so i dont know if i want to start HRT so young although if it turns out that badly i’ll have to reconsider…

Well when it come to your health you can not put a price tag on it. With out health you can not work or goto school to progress you career. Just some food for thought

no you’re completely right. i dont have the money now but i should have it in the next month or so…
