Testing Your Real 1 RM

Hey there,

It’s time for me to test my real 1 RM for each of the big lifts again. My question is: What is the best way of approaching this task?

  • Should I do it after my deload week or after my 5/3/1 week?

  • what is the best warm up rep and weight scheme? (Percentages, resting time…)

Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I do it for my 1’s week. But I go lighter in my 5 and my 3’s. My bench is close to 315, so I do something like this:

Stretch/foam roll

135 x 3
155 x 3
185 x 3
205 x 3
225 x 3

6 pull-ups/stretch
245 x 5
7 pull-ups/stretch
265 x 3
8 pull-ups/stretch

MAX: 315x1

Never waste a day testing. That’s what Jokers are for.

I train a lot of young hockey player’s, around collage age, and I’m a gym owner, so a few years ago we started doing a mock PLing meet, the week between Christmas and New Year’s, since our collage kids were home,( everyone is well fed  and it’s usually a break from hockey season for our younger kids before playoff madness starts. Anyway for any guys that don’t compete as PLer’s this is a pretty cool little thing to do with your buddies or guys from your gym, all 3 lifts in one day like a meet, we film it.

This gives guys training maxes, and a little competition to ramp things up a bit, some of the older lifter’s, real PLer’s judge for them, and it’s a lot o fun. I’m with Jim that it’s usually counter productive to waste a day on max attempts, but if your involved in other sports, and don’t compete as an actual PLer, having a little mock meet, on a set date like this, gives guys something to work towards, just a suggestion for guys out there running 531, and wanting a way to see where they’re really at. Goodluck !

Alright, thanks for your replies!
