Oh, it is. It’s one of those that you don’t see coming at all, but is really quite obvious and simple. We did it in class today, but I seem to have just written a novel, so I’ll save it for later.
I think I’m moving again. This time back to Michigan, where the closest BJJ is 1.5 hrs away. So, my goal is to get in as many classes as possible while I’m here. All there is to do in MI is lift, so it’s taking a back burner again. I’ve been doing my ankle rehabby stuff before class, so I’m not neglecting that. My ROM is getting better now that I’ve been more consistent with it.
Sunday: The BB taught another class. His general idea was to expose us to a bunch of stuff that we could later learn in detail in classes. Sundays are no gi, so we started with self defense.
Highlights: If someone is angrily approaching you, keep your hands up in a ‘Bro, I don’t want any trouble’ way. So hands up, elbows in because that where you’re strongest. If he gets in your face, put your hands on his shoulders and keep some space. Elbows bent and in the whole time. If he continues to press into you (you know that weird chest bump pressure guys do), place your hands on his biceps close to the elbows and step back into base.
The hands on the elbows will be able to sense when he’s going for a punch. When he lifts his arm for a punch (most guys are not professional boxers and will throw wide haymaker like shots) duck under that arm for the T position. In the T position, remember to pinch the arm that’s away from you, close to his body so he can’t punch. Keep your head close to the body to minimize head butts, and keep you hips as close as possible to his.
From the t position, we did some takedowns. Hip tosses, hooking the leg and spining around. If he just stand there, knee him in the gut and he’ll step back for the hip toss. If he’s just keeping his base really well, step in front of him and kick out his calf to take him down.
Pulling his head into the guillotine while standing. Once you’ve popped him down, use the ridge of your hand at the base of his skull to pull his head down. If you don’t want to guillotine, you can chin strap him and then pick either ankle to take him down. When he falls he usually sits back up into a butterfly guard. In order to pass, pop his shoulders back and then grab his ankle to make him sit back into you. Then connect your knee and hand and baseball slide into the pass.
We learned it incrementally, but it all came together in the end into a nice sequence.

One of the guy’s strap marks. I think he got the worst of it. When I got my blue belt, they barely hit me (no complaints though). [/quote]
Gotta love hazing Did everyone get a hit, or only those with the same belt or above?
BJJ is awesome, and I’d love to get into it someday

Everyone gets a hit. There were probably about 30 people there, so he got hit about 60 times.
A funny video to break up the walls of text that are sure to come.
It’s just so true. Our instructor works hard to make sure that guys that can’t afford class can still train. He’ll work out some sort of barter, or let them pay when they can. There are a lot of guys who still ‘really want to come’ but ‘can’t’.

Oh ok. When I was in the military, when you got promoted to NCO and earned the “blood stripe” on your dress blue trousers, everyone that was at or above your rank would knee you in the thigh and punch the shit out of your arms. Who says hazing is a bad thing? It builds character!
I remember talking about the two on one with you when I was first thinking about take downs and really liked it, now that I know a little more I think it’s what I’m going to use as my go to for grip fighting. Everyone always pushes for the snatch single, but sliding in on my knees has always felt off. The Russian feels more natural to me. I might take some judo when I’m back in MI, but this is the place closest to where I’ll be and the review is really negative http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=48064 esp since I’m a ‘bjj guy.’ I might check out a class to see for myself.
Hey Guys! Life’s been all changes lately. I’ve moved! I haven’t moved all of my stuff yet, that’s going to be another few trips. My parents left on a 6mo trip to India. It’s going to be really odd not to have them within driving distance. I’m not sure what I’m doing about a gym, or BJJ. I’m about an hour from everything, so it’s going to take some planning. I have to figure out an at home plan. I’ve got a treadmill, a 15lb kettlebell, and the great snow covered outdoors. Suggestions?
Wow. Don’t have any suggestions, sorry, but wanted to let you know I’d dropped by. Is there some other martial art you could pick up? You mentioned Judo as perhaps being a possibility before?
I’m finally settled! I’ve been quite the nomad the last few weeks. Now I’m in one place though and plan on being here for at least 6 months. I found a gym that’s close. It’s a ‘family’ gym and there are lots of babies everywhere, but they do have a weight ‘area’ so it’s better then nothing. They don’t have anything fancy, but they’ve go the basics so I’ll be good on the lifting aspect. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do about BJJ, I have to let the semester get started and settled before I figure out how far I’m willing to drive. An hour and a half drive each week doesn’t seem impossible.
Anyway, I’m going back to the program I was doing before life got tumultuous. Three lifting days squat, DL and upper body focus, and to replace the BJJ I’ll throw in some cardio. There’s a treadmill in the basement, so I’ve been playing with running barefoot (in my socks) on it. I’m not at all a runner, so I haven’t done anything more than a slow mile, but it doesn’t suck.
I got into the weight room for the first time in forever last night. There were a lot of babies and distraction so I’m going to have to practice my sucking it up, but I felt amazing afterwards. They do have an incredibly delightful steam room.
Warm up
Ankle Stuffs
A1) One arm DB Snatch 35x5x5
A2) Plank x5
My favoritest movement ever (snatch) supersetted with the one I hate the most (plank).
DL 135x5x5
Lat Pull Down 117.5x5x5
I never understand these machines when it comes to designating weights, it went from 91.5 to 117.5? I doubt they’re even close to that anyway, but it’s a measure of progress.
MP 20x5x5
Then it was do a cool down circuit or check out the steam room before it closed so I went with the latter. It was so worth it. I may go to the gym everyday for the steam room. It’s awesome!
I feel kinda bad for continuing to disappear, I feel like you guys are my friends and I just vanish. I do occasionally lurk in logs when I’m not posting. It just feels ridiculous to post on T-Nation when I’m not lifting or rolling. I’m back consistently for a while though, so maybe my sorry should be about that. Lolcats here I come!
