I haven’t lifted in a week. When I have to choose between BJJ and the gym I pick BJJ.
Monday in BJJ.
We continued with the theme of things that went wrong during the tournament. One of those things was people stalling in mount. Once someone mounts you they can just hang out and ride out the clock. It’s not something we encounter during rolling in class since we don’t really roll for time. Waiting out the clock doesn’t make sense when your goal is to win by submission.
I worked with a newer white belt, and got kinda frustrated with him. I could feel myself getting cranky, but couldn’t completely hold it back. He didn’t understand how to take mount, so it was hard to drill how to escape it. Also, we were transitioning into side control and I could clearly see I was hurting him, but every time I asked if he was okay he would just say yes. A part of me wanted to crush him more to make him say it hurt. I don’t know I didn’t go to class that cranky, I just felt mean. Also, he kept accidentally pulling my hair. It added to wanting to just completely break his ribs.
In class we drilled catching the bottom leg when he tries to go to mount. Then if he actually gets mount, making the elbow escape instinct. If you don’t elbow escape in time, you do the Hickson escape. If he goes to mount, but you feel him take his weight off the bottom leg, sweep him over.
After drilling I rolled with Noah for a bit. I can’t let that guy get on top anymore, once he has a chance to put his weight on me I feel like all I do is play defense. It fucking sucks.
Then I rolled with Chuck. He’s better than me, but is really good about using technique not strength. He dominated the whole match, and I was playing defense the whole time. I didn’t feel too bad at the end though, because throughout the match I wanted to give up and just tap, but I didn’t. I didn’t roll that well, but I did stick with it through the suck.
Mikey watched the Chuck debacle and so I asked him for tips. Its really evident that I don’t want my ribs crushed, and like I’ve said previously it hinders how I roll. So, Clark talked to me a bit about how to be on my side without hearing ribs crunching. It’s a lot like opening the guard, you have to have your elbow at the top of their knee. It’s something I’m going to play with.
