Tacky and Heavier Stones

I have a competition coming up in a couple of weeks where the last event is Atlas stones ranging from 220-350. I have access to all other implements in the comp. but the only stone I own is about 200#.
So my question is, I have never loaded any stones above 200 but I also have never used tacky before. How much easier will tacky make it and is there any possibility of being able to load the 350 without practice?

Thanks

A 350 is right on the line of a 20"-21" diameter. A 200 is probably a 16". Unless you’ve got a 650lb deadlift, the chance is slim, even with tacky to load a 350. Tacky can add 30-50lbs, and sometimes more to a stone load. Stones are tricky to gauge!

Thanks for the input. This will be my first competition so I just want to gauge where I’m at. So long as I get at least three stones first time around that’s fine by me!

Don’t think it’s compromised though, you might find you are a beast stone lifter and make it to the 350. Keep me posted on how you do.

I get a ton out of tacky. I can’t even lap our 240 with out tacky but can load our 335 with tacky.

Reed uses epoxy tacky! He puts it on his belly and chin so that his entire body is literally one with the stone. They call him the “thing”!

Lol its funny because you don’t know how true it is hahaha

I get to try out a few heavier stones this week as someone near me has them up to 360, so that’s a bonus!
I’ll definitely post back on here with how I did, don’t expect anything miraculous haha I’m punching above my weight a little as some of the other competitors I’m pretty sure have done some pro comps. All I know is I’m gonna try to set some PRs and see how much I enjoy everything.

Events are
Last man standing Axle clean and press

Farmers walk/ Zercher yoke medley-my weight class will be 225 each hand farmers/375 zercher yoke. Both carried for 30m

Last man standing 18" deadlift

Truck pull-slightly uphill. As of now there’s no lead rope either

Atlas stone series to 48"-Middle weights use stones from 220-350

My best guess: the problem will be that while your grip is likely strong enough for the 350, your legs and back may (likely) not be. If you’re going to try out the 360, I’d do a brief warmup and make that the focus of your training session. Multiple, multiple sets, just focusing on incremental improvement. I mean that literally your first goal should be to crack it off the ground - just find the precise position where your feet are most comfortable, your hips are at their strongest, your arms are balanced on the stone, etc etc.

Once you can do that, if it’s difficult you may just want to try to crack it off the ground for a double or triple or whatever. If it’s easy, or if you get to the point where you’re cracking it off the ground several times, try to lap it. Then lap it multiple times. etc etc You’d be surprised how much improvement can be made from one session to the next like this

That’s what it’s about!

I actually had a quick session today with some large stones. I lapped a 335 really easily, like it just flew up, but then my leg cramped and after that I just couldn’t lap it again. I found that when I’m lifting it after the lap is what I suck at, like a 240 was hard for me. So my goal as of now is to get 3 stones and I’m happy!

I got 3 stones! The 4th one was almost to the top but i just couldn’t get it up any higher. I took 4th overall out of 12 as I did pretty well in my other events. All in all I’m pleased with my first competition and will definitely be looking for more!

Congrats! Stones are a good combination of technique and strength, so I’m sure next time with more practice and time with the iron you’ll smoke the 350#.

That’s the plan and thanks

Well done! Now prepare to become obsessed lol.
