Hey all,
I’ll be studying abroad at Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus starting early July and was wondering if I could ask a couple questions…
-
From what I hear I shouldn’t look for housing until I actually arrive. So I’ll be staying in a hostel or something cheap while I look for a place to rent until mid-November. Any suggestions on temporary housing??
-
Good gym to join? (if the school’s isn’t any good, I’m not sure at this point.)
-
Where to shop for cheap (relatively) groceries?
Thats all for now, Thanks in advance.

I’m in Brisbane (1 hour north of the Gold Coast) also studying at Griffith Uni, final year biotechnology student. A good place to look for housing is on the griffith website www.griffith.edu.au search for accomodation.
The gold coast campus should have a good gym or at least a passable one with relatively cheap rates. As for groceries look for ALDI or if that fails look for the specials in woolworths (big chain store like walmart only food based). What are you studying? best of luck. Welcome to Oz
I’m a sociology major, this will be my fall of senior year so I’m taking 3 sociology courses and 1 history course (an elective). Should be pretty fun, since I don’t plan on busting my ass for good grades. I only need a C or better for it to transfer back here.
Rehashing this old thread because the Uni doesn’t have a gym! So, anyone have any suggestions for a good gym on the Gold Coast?? Thanks.
grab your surfing bag, fill it with 200lbs of sand, and badda bing! you’re set

It depends on what you call cheap. Wait 'til you get over here and have a look around once you are here. One thing you will always find here is a hotel room at a reasonable price. Christmas holidays excepted.

Wait until you find your place to stay. There are a few good ones around the GC but some would be a long haul from your house.

I live basically in the heart of the GC across the road from the beach. Oh yeah, life is good. I just go to the supermarket at the Centro arcade. Possibly a little pricier but it is all convenience.
Anyway, you’ll enjoy it over here. You are truly better off just rolling up and you’ll work out all the answers in a day or two max.
Enjoy it mate.
Queenslander!
I don’t know anything about the gym at Griffith but there’s some info here : http://www.gugcstudentguild.com.au/DisplayPage.asp?pageid=3873
Some of the gyms at unis here are good. SOme suck. The gym where I studied (ANU) was excellent - in fact I’ve had a hard time finding anything better here on the Gold Coast.
As for Groceries there’s a Woolworths at Australia Fair, but I’m sure there’s something closer. I agree with the post re Woolworths at Centro. I guess you pay for convenience.
I drove past the uni a couple of times today and saw a supermarket that I completely forgot about. The Supa IGA at Crestwood Plaza is probably your closest well priced place.
