T-Nation C2 500m Sprint Competition

He should have a show like shaq did.

PUDZ VS.

I did this as a finisher to my workout on Sunday.

1:26.1 which puts me @ 104 in the world on the concept2 website.

I didn’t remember to see what the damper was on but afterwards I didn’t know what I wanted to do first: cry or vomit.

It turns out I just had to cry a little bit and lay down for 20 minutes.

Just a note, while it is a good indicator of where you are at, the rankings on the concept 2 website are simply those which have been submitted to Concept2, which are few and fAR between. These are typically from comp. and random submissions. So 104th is the 104th fastest time they have submitted, nothing more. A competitive high school rower would typically be able to pull 1:26 or faster. A better ranking to match your time against would be the C.R.A.S.H-B’s which is a 200o meter competition. Not trying to be a dick or anything, just thought I would point it out.

Thanks for pointing that out – I appreciate your insight. I’m just pleased that in my old age (I’m 26) I can compete with high school athletes. Also, instead of trying the 2000m I’d rather walk in front of a snow plow.

Thought I would bring the threat up to date. Recently managed a 1:19 for 500m. Wondering if I will ever duplicate it again.

PR is a 1:22.9 after a workout, curious what I could do fresh…

i havent read all the thread as there is too much but i gave this a go today at the gym.

500m in 1.39

considering im fat, currently on night shifts, cutting carbs, done this at the end of my workout and have only had a protein shake i didnt think this was too bad lol no excuses eh?

im gonna try this once or twice a week and see how i improve. Nearly died after!

PR was at uni and in the high 1:20s (c 10 years ago). Now probably low 1:30s. A normal workout on the rower is 6-8 reps of 500m at 1:40 with 1 min rest. Alternatively I do a progression - 500m @ 2:00, straight into 500m @ 1:55, 500m @ 1:50, 500m @ 1:45, 500m @ 1:40, then back to 500m @ 2:00.

I can always get a great workout on the ergo.

FWIW - HR tracking from my last session. 7 x 500m @ 1:40 w/ 1:00 rest. Definitely a good workout and already programmed in the Concept 2.

Wow forgot about this thread. Think 1.23ish is my PB now, but it is not something I really do often as I am training specifically for 5k races at moment, being in head season. May mess around and see if I am capable of sub 1.20 after head season finishes. Also working towards a sub 6.30 2k. Now a 2k row is a true test of conditioning.

@ Swede not a bad workout. Used to do 8 x 500m sprints in regatta season. They were always brutal.

Thinking that it might be time to start increasing the speed; say 1:38s. I only row for conditioning so I’m not overly fussed about race speed, just keen to get a good workout. Definitely ack your 2k statement. I think at uni days I went c 6:37. Brutal training.

hit 121.4 stone cold in untied boots and pants…tasted blood for the next hour…

Cracked 6 x 500 @ 1:38 w/1 min rest this week. Will work up to 8 @ 1:38 then drop back down to 4 @ 1:36. Slow but steady progress.

Interested to know - what stroke rate do most people go with?

Good effort that’s some going. Don’t think I would be capable of 8 @ 1:38, but that’s probably why I am a shit rower. I did manage to hit 2 x 20 minutes under 1:50.0 split though last week which was fairly solid with rate below 24.

For 500s I would guess mid to high 30s would be best. Higher at the start just to get it going before you lengthen out.

Roger that to start with, but I’m a fairly big unit so can get away with a c 31 rate.

4 x 1:36 this week. Pretty fucking brutal for the second half of the second two reps. Rested 5 mins then just managed to make it through another 500 in 1:40. I think that progress up to 8 x 1:36 is going to be slow and painful.

Damn good workout though.

Did my first 500m sprint sessions in a while last week. Managed 6 x 500m at 1:36 with 3 minute rest. Hoping to get this to 8 x 1:34/1:35 but am still recovering from injury at the moment. Sprints are so painful when you have not done them for a while.

Pulled a 1:26 couple weeks ago, that same row I had went 300m @ 1:21 but couldnt keep up the pace and lost good sync with my pull.

I row 1000m regardless after my major weight work whenever I train @ 1:55-1:58 pace. Good conditioning tool.

They’re always painful. I keep the setting at the 1 min rest that the Concept II has automatically programmed in. I wouldn’t have the discipline to keep to another rest time.
