T. Morrisson, MMA X-Factor..Not!

CAMPE VERDE, Ariz., June 7 – Inside the Cliff Castle Casino conference room boxer Tommy “The Duke” Morrison answered questions about why he is turning to mixed martial arts. The former world champ also addressed his health.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona once called mixed martial arts “human cockfighting.” Ninety miles north of the state capitol, Morrison will challenge himself in the MMA arena Saturday night.

In 1996 Morrison retired from boxing after revealing that he tested positive for HIV. After an 11-year hiatus from the sport he loved, Morrison declared himself HIV free prior his return to the ring, claiming tests since the one conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission have come back negative for the life-threatening virus.

“The more I read, the more I researched, I realized that everything the doctors were telling me was a lie,” Morrison said.

Morrison returned to the boxing ring on Feb. 22 of this year. Licensed by the West Virginia Athletic Commission, Morrison dispatched brawler John Castle via KO early in their scheduled four-round fight.

The Arizona State Boxing Commission has no sanctioning power over the Worldwide Fighting Championship event, which is being promoted outside of the jurisdiction of the state regulatory body on the Yavapai-Apache Nation.

No blood, heart, or eye exams were required as part of the pre-fight medical examination.

The emotional Morrison felt even after the layoff he is in top physical shape.

“They’ve been telling me I’ve been dying for 11 years,” he said. “I feel fine. The day they told me I was clinically dead I didn’t feel any different sitting in that chair than I do standing up here right now. Something’s wrong. It just doesn’t add up.”

Morrison was upbeat about trying his hand at the MMA game and also about trying out the sport’s equipment, having never put on MMA-style gloves until earlier this week.

“Its something I’m very excited about,” said the 38-year-old from Jay, Oklahoma. “This is the first time I’ve fought with 4-ounce gloves on and I’m worried about it. Not for myself but for my opponent.”

The confident boxer made it known that he feels his style of fighting will translate well into the cage.

“I would never grapple with someone unless I was trained to do it,” he said. “To get in there and throw hands with someone who is trained to throw hands doesn’t make much sense to me. I’m here to prove a point. I didn’t come here to play. I’m here to do a job and I plan on doing it in spectacular fashion.”

Morrison stated his fight against 325-pound heavyweight John Stover, a no-show at Thursday’s press conference, won’t last long enough to get to the ground.

As part of his training camp, Morrison, who plans on fighting at 213 pounds, said he did not hire a wrestling or jiu-jitsu coach in preparation for the bout.

“I’m just going to walk out there and hit him on the chin,” he said. “That’s all it takes.”

Hmmmm…does it sound like he’s trying to prove that boxing is superior to MMA?

He shouldn’t even be allowed to fight. He has AIDS and won’t live another 10 years, since he’s been infected for a while. It’s only his medication that prevents the disease from showing up in any tests.

Maybe the Iceman will get his dream matchup after all!

Doesn’t he claim he stopped taking his meds long ago?

Hey Big Boss, how ya doing?

I just wanted to remind you Morrison sux but he would own Cro Cop.

What a fucking joke.

I particularly like the part where he says he didn’t hire a Jiu Jitsu or wrestling coach. I hope this douche gets taken down, ground an pounded until he gives up an arm or his back. This is just as bad as Kimbo and Mercer.

Funny that you should mention Ray Mercer.

No worries. It kind of fun. I think you might be able to take on Tommy Gun Morrison if he refuses to train any ground fighting.

It doesn’t matter the HIV virus can live in your body WITHOUT KILLING YOU. BUT you can still infect other people.

Its a shame that this fighter isn’t allowed to pursue his passion due to an infectious decease. BUT him claiming being “cured” and putting other people at risk is EXTREMELY stupid and immature.

What is worst is that there are people willing to let him fight again.

Morrison is now claiming he never had AIDS and the original test was a false positive.

His ex manager says Morrison tested positive.

He might win a few fights if they get him the right matchups, but considering he isn’t willing to learn anything in terms of wrestling and bjj, it could be an easy win for any decent fighter. Most people don’t understand the intricacies of the ground game. Even Kyra Gracie would be able to beat him rather easily.

Morrisson won by knockout in the first round, but here’s the catch… 1 hour before the fight they changed the rules to no ground fighting, no knees, and no kicking. Basically, a boxing match with 4 ounce gloves. This proves nothing if he starts running his mouth about MMA fighters.

So what was he trying to prove?

He has been running his mouth about boxers being tougher than MMA fighters, blah, blah, blah. He originally signed this fight as his first MMA fight, and he has said he wanted to prove that even an average boxer can beat MMA fighters. Then he he gets it changed to a boxing match at the last minute.

The other guy is an MMA fighter, so I don’t think he pushed for the change in rules. Maybe you should know the story before making stupid comments. Try to keep up.

Huh, what stupid comment?

Reading the interview on Sherdog, his opponent seemed like a good sport about it all. But the whole thing was pointless with the rule change and proved nothing.

Yeah, that’s what I originally said.

From the Sherdog article it sounds like Stover wanted to fight under the originally agreed upon rules but Tommy wouldn’t do it. Stover probably didn’t want to back out so agreed anyway.

From Sherdog:

“Yeah they switched up the rules,” said the 35-year-old Stover. “At first it was strikes only knees, elbows, and kicks. They switched them up about a half hour before the show. We tried to barter around it, but Tommy, he doesn’t want to do MMA. He needs to get paid. He needs his money. He needs to get his name back out there and this is basically all he’s doing.”

After the fight Stover addressed the media and claimed the rule changes played a role in the eventually outcome of the fight.

“If the fight went to the ground he would have been done in like a minute. A little less than that, about 30 seconds. That’s kind of arrogant. I don’t know,” he laughed.

My original point was that Morrisson was talking trash about MMA. He agrees to an MMA bout then pulls this crap at the last munite. He’s a joke. Did he market the fight, and get some attention? Sure. But that’s not the point.
