Motley Crue’s Dr. Feelgood concert in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1990 or 1991. I was in college then. My girlfriend from New York took me, and she was at the time working for a Heavy Metal Magazine as their (some division of the magazine) editor, so we had press passes…too kewl. The funny thing was that we both wore torn up daisy dukes, high heeled boots, leather bustiers and big big big big hair, so cliche’!! I was the sheltered Hawaii asian girl…she knew all kinds of neat people and introduced me. I was like a deer in the headlights, so bear with me, all of what happened was very new to me.
We had front row seats and the first six rows were those fold up type chairs. Right when the concert started, we immediately became crushed against the stage by the crowd. Some of my local guy friends happened to be sitting behind us (now standing behind and crushing us), so they picked up a couple of folding chairs that had been tossed aside and opened them for us, picked me up, and stood me up on one of the chairs- my gf signalled that she didn’t want to stand on the chair and was content to be crushed against the stage by the crowd. I noticed everyone had earplugs in, whatever, I thought.
Tommy’s looong drum solos were the bomb. After the concert, we went backstage, my girlfriend was doing her press thing and I stood by some people my girlfriend had introduced me to. She disappeared way backstage. Nikki Sixx and Brandy Brandt walked out and Nikki chatted with the guy who was “babysitting” me. Mick Mars came out and very briefly chatted with this same guy. I was briefly introduced to them. A now famous porn/playboy model who I had recently done some bikini work with and another girl I knew who was with her said that the people with Motley Crue invited them to go to strip bars with Tommy, and asked if I would like to tag along. Afraid, I declined, and they left with people who were with the band.
My biggest concern was that I could hardly hear anything, people had to shout at me so I could hear them and even then I was reading lips, and what I could hear sounded muffled. My girlfriend finally showed up. We got into my car and I admitted to her my hearing problem. We were shouting at each other, and she shouted, “me too, I’m almost deaf too, it’ll go away in about three days!!” I then asked (shouting) my VERY New York girlfriend about the girls I knew, if they really were going to strip bars with Tommy Lee and she said, “don’t worry about them, they’re just groupies!”
To this day, I’m still slightly deaf from Tommy’s drum solos. It’s kinda kewl that Tommy Lee made me kinda permanently deaf…[/quote]
I’ve also met the Crue. They are definitely a motley group of fellas. Tommy was especially cool and cordial.
