I had to take a month off from squatting/DLing because of my hip. It still acts up but is manageable now. And like Pete said, I’ve found that what helps the most is walking. I have been walking sometimes up to six miles a day to ease the tightness/binding/pain in my hip. It really helps.
Squatted Monday. 3 x 5 x 135 with wraps. Conventional DLed 3 x 5 x 155. Could hardly sit down on the toilet the next day. That’s what happens when I take a month off! I’ve had to narrow my squat stance and bag the sumo for now to placate my hip. Bench continues to go pretty well. All the stabilization work has really paid off. I’m gripping wide and have no pain or binding in my shoulder. My numbers are ever-so-slowly creeping up. I’m thrilled with any progress.
I won’t be competing in August. Just don’t have enough training time to get my numbers up. Instead, I’ll travel to Nebraska to do a USAPL meet in late-September. I’m excited and oh-so-ready to get back on the platform. I have no clue at this point what my numbers might look like.
My husband fell rock climbing this week. First time in 30 years that he’s taken a serious fall. Head injury, stitches, minor fracture in the shin, lots and lots of road rash on his body. I’m so grateful he’s okay. Like he says “My sport does not have safety bars!”
I’m heading out of town on vacation tomorrow. When I return, I start an 8-week training cycle leading up to my meet. I’ll log that for any interested followers.
Hips is so messed up I’ve had to totally stop squatting, DLing, RDLing . . . you name it.
I’ve pouted and considered slitting my wrists. But I found a cheesy thrice-a-week bodybuilding program (upper only) to focus on instead.
So I’m out of the PLing scene for now. At least as a lifter. I am going to USAPL Raw Nationals next weekend as a spectator. Can’t wait to see such names as Sioux-Z Hartwig Gary, Jennifer Thompson, Brad Gillingham, Mike Tuscherer, and Eric Kupperstein. For those of you who don’t know the last name, he’s a tiny powerhouse. In the 123 class and has a qualifying total of 1162.
Agree with those above, it puts my little bumps in the road into perspective. You needed to work on bench anyway, right? So now you have it prioritized.

Saw my ART guy today about my hip. He said I have a seriously strained hip flexor/ileopsoas/ileo-something
else. Every time I squat or DL, I wake up the next day with muscle spasms and unable to walk without a prominent limp. It’s a cycle that can become chronic. And since I don’t need chronic hip/groin pain, I’m taking a break from squatting (sniff!) and DLing to focus on my BENCH!

If it makes you feel any better, I’m in nearly the same boat…haven’t DL’ed or Squatted in over a month now and it is really getting to me…my arms and bench are doing well though lol
Are you still seeing your ART guy? I swear those guys are so hit or miss its almost not worth the trouble…I have no idea how long you’ve been going to yours, but if he isnt getting you to where you need to be, perhaps consider a new guy? Just a thought…
I’m still alive and kicking. Also still reading your logs. Just not commenting much. So keep up the strong work.
My hip is debilitating enough that I cannot squat or DL at this time. I will eventually be seeing a professional to get a diagnosis since the various quasi-medical treatments I’ve tried have provided no solution. I’ve been to a number of PLing meets this summer. Either working the tables or helping lifters. The next meet I attend will be one where I’m on the platform. I’m done sitting on the sidelines.
My coach made the IPF world team again this year. So I’m focused on his training for the time being.
I’m not just sitting around, though. I’ve been walking a lot. It clears my head, which is always a good thing. And I started these military-style bootcampy classes. I know. I know.
I randomly came across a post in the Pendlay forums where Pendlay mentioned that Pat Mendes (of YouTube fame, from Broz’ gym in Las Vegas, currently suspended from weightlifting for GH use) stayed with the CalStrength guys while waiting to see Kelly Starrett (the mobility guru). …in case you wanted to give “quasi-medical” treatments one last try.
