How cool about your daughter and the article!! We had a young girl, 12 I think? compete in the meet that my boyfriend and I helped run in Missoula last March. I literally had tears in my eyes and that trembly feeling in my throat watching her deadlift! She has the advantage that her dad is a lifter as well. It was extra cool because her older sibs (she is the youngest of three) were busy with I think track and basketball tournaments. Mom had stayed home to watch one or the other, and the youngest girl got Dad to herself at the meet. Warmed the cockles of my heart.
Our gym is also in our garage. It is an oversized double car garage and has never had a car in it, just gym equipment. I am very spoiled as it is very well equipped! And comes with a built in personal trainer and workout partners. I have not lifted in a gym setting since high school. I’ve joined gyms a time or two in the ensuing years, but did not do much lifting. The last gym had a rule that you had to be trained to use the equipment, but they never had a trainer avail when I was. Sigh.
I don’t know if she will ever really be a lifter. I just like that she got a bit of attention; particularly in a sport I compete in. She’s a total mommy’s girl. She’s often felt like she’s in her big sister’s shadow so to be singled out even for a little thing like that is a big deal to her.
I think sometimes kids just need to watch what you’re doing and be left to their own devices to emulate you or not. I’d be thrilled for both of my daughter’s to find something that truly excites them and gets them out of bed in the morning. It doesn’t have to be the same thing as me though; just something.
You’re so lucky to have a built in trainer. Do you ever find it gets on your nerves though? I don’t think I could have done it with my husband. I need to do it my way and either fail or succeed on my own. I guess I never could be told :)[/quote]
I am very fortunate to have a built in trainer, and I love having him out in the gym with me. He actually is training both his 71 yr old mom AND me, and now we have added his stepfather to the mix. The stepfather is recovering from some heart issues, just finished up his cardiac rehab, and his dr urged him to lift with us. So we are an interesting mix.
My bf is an awesome trainer–very knowlegable, and gentle in his training methods. Though his favorite phrase is “it’s not rocket science” when I invariably screw up. He has a way of encouraging and pushing without causing frustration. And I really trust him, so when he tells me I can do something, then I think I can, and as you know that is half the battle!
I hear you about your husband (but perhaps a hint at why he is an EX, lol…) My bf and I have only been together since last August so partly the newness has not totally worn off yet and we still see each other with the rosy colored glasses. Also, with everything I have been through the last four plus years (husband battling cancer, husband dying, losing my house THREE TIMES in less than five years–renting bites–knee surgery, pulmonary embolism and a brush with death, issues with my 22 yr old daughter ((including but not limited to reacting badly to her dad’s illness, having a seriously-dangerous-suspected-of-murder boyfriend who beat her up, being homeless for a time, losing ALL of her possessions not once but twice, cutting two nerves in her hand, requiring surgery with NO insurance, being out of work twice, her new boyfriend ending up in jail on a felony DUI charge and leaving her with ALL the bills, losing her house and living in a camp trailer in the woods with two dogs and a cat…)))
Anyway, my point is, I have been through a shit ton of stuff, and I have learned what is important and what is not in life. I simply do not let the small stuff sweat me, and things that used to ruffle my feathers do not even compute, anymore!
Whew. Hm. Someone awhile back suggested I have myself checked for adrenal fatigue. Putting everything in a list like this (and a TRUNCATED list at that…) really makes me realize there is probably a good lot of merit in that suggestion!
Long answer to the short question–I love training with my boyfriend. He is away for the summer so I am having to find confidence in myself to be able to train and understand what I am doing. This is a good thing, but a tad nervewracking. Before, he told me what to do, and I did it! Strength Training Anatomy book is my new bff.
