Rugby season is coming up and I need to prepare a bit before then so… Assuming that I will be working out 3x /week with a full body workout plus snowboarding both days on the weekend and when the coaches start doing pre-season practices.
I need to minimize fat gain (with possibly even some loss if I can) while gaining as much strength and muscle as I can. I’m 6’1, 215 lbs, 18-21% BF and I’m a prop (one of the guys at the front of the scrum that takes the brunt of the contact in the scrum.
I was thinking that I would order:
HOT-ROX Extreme
BCAA’s
Surge Recovery
Low Carb Metabolic Drive
Flameout
Creatine
and mayyybe Spike capsules if they’re worth it
I’ve also been working out for a month and a bit and I’m enjoying my newbie gains so far. I’m braced for the flaming lol so hit me with all you’ve got.
You’re honestly a lot better off going without most supplements at first, so you can figure out what you need to work on. Just focus on getting the most out of your workouts and diet, then you can shift to supplements later. Except, of course, for whey and creatine. They’re always good to have.
The only supplement I would recommend for a beginner is fish oil. Flameout would work just fine and most likely better than most fish oil brands out there.
Supplements should be reserved for once your progress has stalled. Eat right, eat a lot, work out with serious intensity and supplements shouldn’t be needed for a while, if ever depending on goals.
edit:
I am a former rugger as well (scrum half). Remember that legs lead the way in just about every sport, especially rugby. You’re kind of tall for a prop. Ever think about dropping a little weight/bf %, adding more mobility drills and moving to maybe flanker?
Neck bridges, squats (front and back squats) deadlifts, basically the compound movements should make up the bulk of your training. Good luck.
the first supp i got after working out for maybe 6 months was a protein powder.
then i got a multivitamin
then fish oil/flax oil
then creatine
thats all you really need but i take ephedrine before training and some caffiene here and there, and i tried ZMA but it gave me mad zits so i stopped
Part of why I disagree with using any real supplements is that in all of our fussing about PWO nutrition we’ve neglected the growth hormone spike that results from bouts of intense exercise.
If we let it sit for a bit we burn fat, build muscle (as gh is a protein sparing hormone) and reduce our baseline insuline levels. Insuline is anabolic, but not necessarily always for muscle, while gh is always anabolic and works on our muscles.
I’m of the mind that if you can shoot it, catch it or grow it, it’s good to eat. If not, leave it alone.
edit:
That’s not meant to be an attack, just my take on things. Newbies could use all the information they can get in my opinion.

When you say you play rugby, where abouts do you play (location/league)?
A prop taking HOT-ROX in pre-season sounds crazy and at only 215lbs??!? How old are you??
I played backrow at club and uni/schools level for 10 years and tighthead prop at sem-pro/pro level for 5 years… For the sake of your health and the fact that you’re playing prop, you’ve got your back and neck to think about here, you can’t afford any muscle waste… be very carful using anything that would suggest dropping weight/cutting.
