Supplements for Depression

Vicomte: PET scan of the brain for depression - Mayo Clinic (for a very base example). But certainly this is not easily quantifiable as of now (or economically feasible or safe on a large scale). Just proof that there is a before/after that can be tracked, and may be, imo more objective than most of the SIGECAPS-style data that is used currently.

Alex: Very true. But please don’t let overuse/overprescription by some (many) physicians equate to lack of efficacy. Depression is tough to treat, and, as said above, much more poorly understood than diabetes, COPD, etc. Again, I’m a fan of using all avenues. Just didnt want things to get out of hand with the boilerplate drubbing of western med that so often happens here

An interesting study on the anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects of Ashwagandha…

Another…

St. Johns Wort–its one of the few herbal treatments that has actually been studied. The results were as good as prescription anti-depressants with none of the adverse side effects. http://www.reuters.com/article/2008/10/07/us-depression-stjohnswort-idUSTRE496A2M20081007

I’ll have to look into this. The one picture really doesn’t mean anything, without context.

Interesting, though, if valid.

And for the guy that said only a quarter of A-D meds are prescribed by psychiatrists: that’s a huge problem. IME, most GPs will throw out an SSRI scrip before they care to refer you to a shrink. That’s just lazy medicine.

BBB,
after reading so many of your knowledgeable posts I’m completely baffled as to why you recommend ‘short sunbed sessions’? Please can you elaborate why this is necessary with 10,000IU vitamin D3 and the abundance of negative press it gets?
Thanks.

Ok so after reading through this I went with BBB recommendation of D3 and eliminating dairy, wheat, and gluten. Today was the first day I took D3, I took 5000iu’s and found that i was in a better mood. I think thats the placebo affect but whatever works! im going to stick with it.

Any bad side effects from taking high doses of D3 that I should be worried about? btw i was going to do fishoil also but its very expensive to take 30g of fishoil a day… might save money for that and then start.

Hello Golder.

In the “Brain Boosters Thread” it is also asked of him I’ll quote the neccessary parts;

Hurrah for Neurostim remembering the exact page.

(Thanking BBB of course)

Hi,

Upon seeing BBB’s post albiet in a different thread I did some investigation.

The book I happened upon was;

B005FCKN2S

If you copy and paste it into Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk (depending on area) it will bring you to what looks like a silly book for 79p / 99c

The reviews seems to lead towards it being an excellent book - I just got it myself and will read tonight.

May be worth downloading yourself for further reading.

Vol.

Further - I (used?) to have severe depression.

I have been on multiple SSRI’s but they caused me to become more aggressive (?) and I’m very very mild mannered. I would fly off the handle at the most trivial of things.

Flameout - even though I ship it from US to Ireland (now Scotland) has been amazing. Both for the energy and “good mood” feeling.

I’d also recommend;

Was really good for the first week then the “feeling” wore off but it was helpfull.

More stuff you do the better - gym, walk, sprinting, work…

Back then I much preferred my own company - I dreaded social situations. Now I’m a social “butterfly” ha.

As you can see BBB has been an amazing resource - as soon as I stop all my jet setting I shall obtain his services.

Enough of an essay !

Some great posts in here! Here’s what I’ve found works best for me:
High Dose Fish Oil - 30g/day
Vitamin D - 5,000 IUs/day
Eliminating Dairy and Gluten
Eliminating Cardio
Some carbs at night

This has been more consistent than any anti-depressant… with no side effects!
^This… plus:

ZMA, St. John’s Wort, SAMe, eliminate stimulants (ie. caffeine), keep weight training sessions short (under an hour), and enjoy life!
^This… Plus: 5-HTP 150-200mg 30 minutes before bed.

Too many variables
