Even if it did effect muscle building (it doesn’t) going off it would most likely make training, eating etc much more mentally difficult. Also food for thought if you are considering it, you should consider that the sertraline may be helping keeping things under control, it’s a fairly common story for people on SSRIs to stop because they feel better and then end up back where they began.
Long story short talk to you doctor about the drug if you have concerns.
I’ve had no problems with zoloft (which is sertraline). I’ve gained weight over the years but only because of alcohol (which I shouldn’t be drinking while on it anyways).
sertraline will cause you to gain weight… look at dealing with your OCD from a natural nutritional standpoint. Fish oil, inositol, probiotics and holy basil are your best bets here. Diet also needs to be in order as well. You can take them concurrently with Sertraline, and eventually once you feel better, ween yourself off it.

Do you have any actual evidence that it causes people to gain weight? Or do people on it tend to gain weight simply because they’re no longer too depressed to eat?

There’s ample scientific evidence that shows SSRIs cause weight gain… A simple google or pubmed search will bring up plenty of evidence for you. And I’ve also seen it plenty of times with first hand experience working with people – once they stop the SSRIs, fat loss becomes much easier.

From what I’ve read on pubmed, there isn’t any definitive study showing weight gain as caused by sertraline, though I could be wrong. Weight gain also isn’t listed as a side effect and side effect listings tend to be pretty exhaustive.
While some psych meds to tend to be over prescribed, I would argue that there is a fair amount of danger in self-weaning off psych meds especially based on advice from a internet forum.

Sertraline doesn’t cause weight gain. It hasn’t for me or anyone I know.
And if you have a genuine medical condition, diet is not going to do jack shit. You really have to have a psychological disorder to really know.
OP, how are you getting on with the sertraline? I was on it before, but moved to fluoxetine to try and lose the negative side-effects (libido, etc.). Unfortunately, now that I’m off it, I seem to be one of the small percentage that gets hit with the side-effects permanently.
If you are experiencing side effects, from what I’ve read Wellbutrin would be a safer bet as it doesn’t seem to screw up your dopamine like many other SSRIs.
I’ve been reading up on SSRI side-effects including lowering of testosterone, but I can only seem to find anecdotal evidence so far.

Has anyone managed to get into a competitive bodybuilding body fat level on these tablets?

The chances you will run into a bodybuilder that has competed would increase if you went to the “Bodybuilding” Forums.
Go to “Forums” drop down list
Hold your arrow over the “Forums” that drops down
– Click on Bodybuilding
ask Shelby Starnes over at elitefts, he’s worked with people on all sorts of different medications. John Meadow s here might also be able to shed some light.
Personally I think it can be done, the last 5-10 pounds might just be a bit more stubborn.
Obviously whatever you do stay on the meds and don’t do anything drastic without contacting your doc.

Have you by any chance known anyone who has been on these meds and got to a low body fat?

Not contest bodybuilding, but I have someone in my family on seroxat who went from a UK dress size 20 to 6 in about 6 months
Not sure I can add too much to this thread but I have been on Celexa for a little over 2 months now and I have noticed no weight gain at all. I read all of the negative side effects in regards to weight gain so I have gone the extra mile to really tighten up my diet. I’m sure that has something to do with it. But I have been getting noticebly leaner over the past month.
Thought I would chime in since I know what its like to have to rely on an ssri

I have PTSD (child abuse) that led to OCD as well.
So some things on SSRIs and neurochemical medications:
Different drugs have different side effects for different people… i.e. just because it makes one person gain weight doesn’t mean the same drug won’t make a different person LOSE weight
If you don’t like the side effects of one drug, try another
The mental benefit /treatment efficacy of a drug varies from person-to-person
So… I’ve been on pretty much everything: Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor…
It’s only the last one that’s actually worked for me AND doesn’t have a milieu of side effects I can’t stand (worst thing is that I sweat more now… big whoop). So,basically, DO NOT GO OFF THE MEDICATION. Seriously, it fucks you up. Serotonin imbalance will kick in WORSE than before. You could kill yourself. The flashbacks… god… they become unbearable. Do not go off the medication. I repeat: DO. NOT. GO. OFF. THE. MEDS. If you can’t cut the way you want, talk to your doctor, and switch medications.
