I actually enjoy league quite a lot, minus the mandatory 3 second gay humping after every tackle. The vision and playmaking abilities of league players (nevermind athleticism) is very astute.
Kickoff of the first game is in under 24 hours
And I STILL don’t have a way to watch
I played League for a few summers instead of 7’s to see what it was about. I didn’t like the whole “humping” thing either! (got yellow carded a few times over it LOL) But I have to say that playing League actually helped my ball handling skills a lot - I’m a forward in Union, so we didn’t usually emphasize that, focusing more on set play rather than open play. It helped me become a more well rounded player. But to me, if you’re not rucking and mauling, it just doesn’t FEEL right! I still like League though, but I have to say I’m more of a Union guy.

Absolutely, I am a very tactical player (I play inside centre and flyhalf on occasion despite being bigger than most forwards) and union is much more of a thinking man’s game. I enjoy league as a separate sport almost. If you have setanta you can get it on there,

Yep, if you love Rugby NZ is the place to be. Ever since NZ was announced to host the Rugby world cup people have been talking more rugby than usual. I myself don’t watch any league, unions or 7s, actually preferring the NBA, NFL and Champions League (in that order) but i’m a sucker when it comes to meaningful international rugby matches involving the All Blacks.
The Abs will win the World Cup and then they should do a tour of the US to promote Rugby there.
well with it being an olympic sport too now it’s hopefully going to get huge!
If you wanted to watch it here in prior years, you had to do pay-per-view, have a satellite or go to your local Euro/Aussie/NZ/SA/etc. pub where they had it (at 5 AM).

I know, right! Nothing like a few pints of Guinness in the morning to start your day! LOL
Thanks for the link! I’ll definitely check that out. Did the Waratahs REALLY just beat the Rebels 43 - 0 ?
I’ll definitely be watching the Crusaders vs. Blues tonight. The match is at 1:15 AM which isn’t too bad.
Does anyone know a site where the games are archived?
Haha looks like the rebels are going to be the whipping boys for a while. They did show promise though, I think with some game time they will start organizing themselves better.
I was thoroughly impressed with Cooper Vuna despite his lack of clean ball.
I am super pumped to see the Saders in action, tomorrow it’s the lions vs bulls at a managable hour, so I’d like to see how the lions do as well as hoe Fourie du Preez is playing since he will be vital to South Africa’s world cup campaign.

to continue to some of the other points, I do not think that the scrum is sacrificed in the southern hemisphere rugby (they always hold their own against the teams from up north, except for the aussies everyone knows they can’t scrum for shit).
It was in new zealand where the interest was being lost due to the fact that it was available on tv. Consider that most of the s14 venues are 2-3 times as big as most northern hemisphere venues. Newlands was almost full for most of the seasons and that’s a crowd of 35,000 upwards. I still don’t see how they think the new format is going to get more numbers but that’s not my problem.

No apologies needed. Tone is hard to convey and often misinterpreted on internet forums!
I used to have absolutely no interest in league, but after living in OZ for a few years I def came to appreciate it more. There are some massive hits in league and some great trys that get scored. But, as has been said already, you can’t beat a scrum, ruck and maul.
I’ve got to say that I can’t look past NZ for the world cup, but then I’ve said that before past world cups, and then they’ve choked. Should be the best tournament so far though, regardless of what happens!

How was the game? Completely one sided? Did Cipriani start?

Hilgendorf started but went off after 8 minutes injured. Cipriani played an ok some moments of brilliance mixed with some moments of wtf.
Pretty much like he used to play for england, showing potential but not quite there yet.
The game was not as one sided as the scoreline might suggest, the rebels though were just too unorganized overall and needed some more structure. They were gaining frontfoot ball but they always overcommitted to the breakdown so when they were on the frontfoot there was no one out wide to support or run at gaps. Essentially they would gain good ball then it would go back and be snifled and they’d have to restart the process.

I’m not a big fan of Super 15. Imo the Heineken cup is the best club competition in rugby. Supers is alright, but theres just something special about the Heineken cup that other comps can’t compete with.

At least they score trys in super 15 or stupid 15.
Rugby League is a superior game with better athletes
It will be interesting to see how Cipriani does, I can’t seem him excelling to be honest. He is too weak in defence IMO Fair play for giving it a go though!
Can’t wait to watch the crusaders in action with SBW there now!

The blues vs saders was an awesome match, no SBW though.
Had a question for you guys. I always wanted to try Rugby, but it was never offered at my high school. It looks like a sport I’d like to try. What I have going for me is some power, size (6’4", 240 ± pounds) and a rugged, masculine jawline. What I have going against me is a near complete lack of physical coordination, spatial awareness or even the faintest grasp of the rules of the game.
Are there any leagues for oafish, 32 year old men who have never touched a rugby ball before?

I watched the first half and the saders were up by a considerable amount but I ended up falling asleep around 2 AM or so and missing the second half (I guess I had a senior moment! LOL)
Pimpbot - I am sure your local club would be more than happy to help you learn the game, they should have a couple of teams running…everyone will be more than willing to help you learn.

Just give it a shot, you have nothing to lose!
X 2
Just show up to a few practices and see if you like it. I didn’t start playing until I was 22. I met some guys at a party and they said just show up next Tuesday at 7 with pair of cleats…
Local clubs are always looking for new people. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Practice for the spring season should be starting soon.

There is a place for everyone in rugby!
however you will need to acquire some coordination since rugby is based on it, contrary to popular belief it is not about smashing the other guy silly, that’s just a small component
As said most clubs will be happy to help you out. Where do you live? (is it actually japan or just for the kicks)

So you saw the Toeva tackle down the right flank? what a tackle
I am just getting in to this glorious game known as rugby. It is by far the most fun thing I have ever done. I don’t know how many of you have satellite tv, but there is a channel called Fox Soccer Plus that carries a ton of rugby matches. I just set up my dvr to record all the new matches from all of the different leagues.
Someone mentioned earlier about lack of game breaks to provide advertising time as to one reason why it may not be as popular with the networks here in the U.S. This is something I wish American sports would learn about. Our sporting events waste WAY WAY WAY too much time with commercial breaks. Just my two cents.
Slightly off topic, but I would like to solicit suggestions for a pro team and league to follow?
I played a bit in college, and my high school was actually the subject of a movie Forever Strong (2008) - IMDb (though I played soccer in HS… stupid me), but I really only follow big international test matches (and usually only in recaps, based on U.S. TV coverage). I feel ignorant about the players, and even the backstories on the national teams and selections because I don’t have any idea what goes on in the pro leagues. I like Union (U.S. collegiate rules are essentially Union) and 7s are entertaining. My favorite international side other than the Eagles is the All Blacks.
So, I want to get a bit more into the pros - particularly as World Cup prep, but also just to get to watch and appreciate more good rugby. Hopefully the leagues/teams suggested would be televised in the U.S., or at least easily available on the net. Thanks in advance.
