I did some sumo deadlifts today propped up on 100lb plates. Is it normal to be weaker in this position? I feel I’m stronger off the floor is that normal?
Depends on your leverages but in general that a 2.5-3" inch raise and is usually pretty shitty place to pull from. Add another and you’ll find it much easier.
If its shitty and i get good at it (: lol no but ill try it. I have layed of sumos for about 2 months now just getting back into them. Since i moved my squat in my hips have become more mobile and less sore somehow so im giving it another go!
Thanks REED!!!
Edit;
Another 100lb or 45?
When I do sumo block pulls I use two 45-pound plate under each side and that makes it significantly easier for me since once I get the weight moving I lock it out. I suppose if your sticking point is anywhere besides the floor block pulls could make it more difficult. Also it could be because you’re not used to pulling from blocks so you’re setting up differently.
It felt like i was setting up a bit different but then again i havent pulled regular sumo in awhile. Im gonna do a 3RM Sumo session tuesday to see if maybe ive just gotten weaker at them from not doing them for awhile.
For me sumo is always hardest off the floor but once it breaks ground it always locks out.
Also i forgot to mention i did them after my 3/5/1 Squat sets + Joker sets. So i couldve been worn out from that.
Sumo is almost always harder to break off the floor than conventional for most. I find or fairly rare atleast compared to conventional for a lifter to fail just or above the knee for Sumo. Which is why having awesomely strong quads really helps in the initial drive of sumo. Its one of the reasons I pull in Oly shoes as it allows me to get alot of torque while remaining in proper position out of the bottom, both making it much easier for me to break the bar off the ground and continue pressing through my heels. Alot of people say its stupid due to the .5in heel which is .5 raise in range of motion but, your leverages at the top in my opinion out weigh that .5in increase.
I do sumos weird in a way i think. After the weight comes up and gets passed the knee i can instantly feel the weight drop into my legs.
I had this problem too pulling from a 3" block sumo, I just found it hard to setup and initiate the lift.
