Strongman Training Q&A

While on the subject of suppliers … I cannot recommend anyone purchase anything from Atomic Athletic.

A good friend has had an “open” order with them for a year now. A WHOLE year! He placed a rather large order … and none of it has been filled yet. Not even a stinking book that he ordered … not like that has to be manufactured. He is regularly on the phone with the owner … who seems nice enough … but he isn’t producing the equipment.

My friend has far more patience then I do.

Regards,
Mark

OK, i have been dealing with my calluses by using a pumice stone so they dont rip as much when doing farmers, etc,…now the part that rips is in between the callus and the bottom of my fingers…the first crease at the bottom of the finger…anyone know how to stop this…put tape on it, whatever?

That used to happen to me all the time. I ended using sand paper once a week and just made sure that when i smoothed out the rough spots i went into the crease of the finger there. as long as everything gets sanded down equally you should be good ? That spot does suck though !

this thread is just what i was looking for. Great stuff guys and thanks for taking the time to answer questions.

My overhead pressing is terrible, and i only am able to train the log press 1x a week. My question is what kind of lifts can i use in the actual weightroom to increase my overhead press. Also, can someone explain those db snatches and how to perform them? Is it one arm at a time?

i’m no Brad C. or MachineAZ… but i have been using inclines, push presses, btn jerks, and stuff for tri’s like 3-4boards, floor presses, pin lockouts, …stuff like that… my 2cents

I actually bought some stuff from them a couple months ago and it isnt here and no one will return any of my emails or calls, terrible service if you ask me. now i dont know what to do besides take the guy to court to get my money back. oh well just another reason to never go anywhere but elite for equipment.[/quote]

Assuming you’ve ordered from elite… how long do they usually take? I ordered wrist wraps 13 days ago, haven’t showed up yet-don’t know what to expect.

If we’re talking about he same elite then I’ve ordered countless stuff from them w/o a problem.I’d say give them a little while longer and just email them and ask for a delivery confirmation #.So you can track it yourself.

I have a question for any good explosive presses out there cause I feel I’m slow as shit.Either with an Axle or a Log I have a problem once cleaned actually developing enough explosion to just be able to catch the implement at the top.I know I feel slow when doing it.When I get to say 250-260 I just feel planted to the ground and can’t actually jump or even get my heels off the ground snd quickly back down…What gives?Any specifics movements to help this. Thanks in advance

Lou, even if you can’t generate the same speed with a maximal weight, it definitely helps to “think fast”. The faster you get with submaximal weights (70-85%) the easier it will be to generate just enough speed to get the log or axle off your chest to lockout range.

I would recommend training at speed weights and hitting doubles and triples working on speed and technique. It also helps to hit some maximal weights too, especially with log so you get used to that weight on your chest. Otherwise you’ll have no air and no drive.

Everytime I’ve ordered from them it has arrived faster than I expected it. If you still haven’t recieved them, there may be a problem. Give them a call, get a confirmation number (they usually email it to you) and see if there is a problem, either with them or postal service.

I agree with machine. you definitely need to get used to those heavy weights on your chest, but one day a week you should really work your drive. What I used to do is get the log (whatever implement youre using)to my chest and focus on speed with deep knee bend through the heels.

Youll notice at heavier weights you will end up on your toes more often than not. When doing you speed presses focus on weights you can get good hip drive with through your heels. This will help with speed on your press, and try push jerks with bands to work your speed getting underneath the log.

I know you have said in the past that you were a monstrous bencher in high school but weren’t developed overall, so what was your lifting like in college? I know you have mentioned that you focused on front squats, snatches instead of power cleans and back squats, but I am curious as to the other details.

Also, what kind of routite/training split would you reccomend to an intermediate level trainee that is the antagonist of a hard-gainer, putting on muscle easily but also fat if the conditions aren’t right? My goals are both strength and size.

Thanks fellows hopefully I can finally fix this and just be at least a competive presser.Last couple shows it’s been my downfall event. But just gives me something else to conquer and be happy with when I do it.Thanks again

How much leg drive are you allowed to use on the log press?

Obviously it’s supposed to be a push press, not a strict press. But is rebending the knees into the catch position allowed? I’d think not, because that would make it a jerk of some sort…

Great thread! Thanks in advance.

Rebending of the knees are only NOT allowed on the Viking Press event.

All other press events are anyhow lift.

Actually I’ve been to a show where they didnt allow split-jerking of the axle. Said it would give an advantage to the o-lifters. You were allowed to split your feet out to the side to get under the bar, but no staggering one foot forward on backward.

I’ve never seen restrictions on log presses tho

Loucifer,

Brad C and MachineAZ are definitely more qualified than I am, but I did have a similar problem with Split and Squat Jerks.

To fix this: Before a maximal lift I would hold max-wt +10% for 30 secs. I succeeded many times in making myself more comfortable with the weight which made me smoother and more confident in the upcoming lift.

I hear what your saying and appreciate the advice will try when the time comes. Thanks

Curious. In that case, two more questions for you all:

  1. Why isn’t it called the two-hands anyhow? Seems strange that in an event called ‘press’ you don’t have to.

  2. Why do I see so many videos of competitors using such minimal leg drive and ‘pressing out’ the top half of the movement? Is it because of the awkwardness of the log to jerk, or simply because their OH press strength is much, much better than mine?
