Strongman Gyms in NY

If anyone’s interested, I’ll be at Iron Island this weekend between about 5am and 7am. Early, I admit, but I got family stuff to do during the day. I’ll pretty much be working Lats Farmer’s Walks, Thick bar/Log cleans and the tires/stones every Sat from now until the Jersey show (about 6 or so more weeks) either there or at STEEL (only if needed b/c they don’t have heavy enough tires yet!!!). Otherwise, I’m at Deer Park Gold’s during the week.

Hi There

My name is Andrea. I am the manager at Iron Island Gym in Oceanside, NY on Long Island. The gym is located on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County. The owner, and my father Ralph, has been a huge supporter of Strongman, Powerlifting and Bodybuilding for well over 30 years.

Yes Leistner was the previous owner, but Ralph was the driving force behind the gym. About seven years ago my father bought the gym from Leistner when he had had enough of the business. Iron Island is still running strong. We have been open for nearly 15 years and is now family owned and operated. My husband Nick is the resident bodybuilding guru. My mother and sister-in-law are both involved. And my brother works on the web site.

And as times change so does the clientele. Yes the web site may boast that we have power yoga and other classes, but Saturday afternoons are purely a Powerlifting day. We have tires, logs, reverse hyper machines, monolift squat racks, chains, sleds, and much, much more. We have dumbbells up to 200 lbs. with over 20,000 lbs of free weights. And if that isn’t enough we have history. Yes, there may be some gyms that are opening on Long Island
to house the strongmen and powerlifters but there is no other gym like Iron Island. Many powerlifting records have been broken here. You can come down just to look at the photos if you like.

I just wanted to set the record straight that we are Alive and Kicking Ass. I invite anyone that is looking for a new gym to come and check us out. Or if you just want to train for the day you are also welcome.

If you have any questions you may PM me.

Hope to see you all here.

In health and fitness.

Iron Island Gym

Just to back Andrea up a little, Iron Island is awesome. I usually train there when I’m getting ready for a strongman show. All you need and then some (except atlas stones, but that’s all right!!!)

Im in Brooklyn, Park Slope area, i however work in Port Washington…the gym i go to near home IS NOT a hardcore gym unfortunately but is only a 30 sec walk up the street…it does the trick with 1 SR…thats ok, im the only one that uses it

anyone near me?

Interesting. I do strongman in Boston, but I’m originally from East Setauket. Good to know there is a place to train for when I go home for a few days.

Sully - Gold’s is also planning on opening in Islip in the next month or two. Full athletic facility. Everything from strongman to olympic to powerlifting, pool, track, etc. Supposedly going to be an awesome place. For the rest of you LI locals - I’ll be back at Iron Island early Sat mornings for events/lats starting in mid - Jan. Usually there at 5am when they open the doors. Early, but if anyone wants to join, come on by.

Cool, thanks. If I’m ever over there I will check it out.

That team is insane. I work with some of the wrestlers in the school I teach at (Deer Park) and beating Islip is basically their goal for the year, especially after they came within a few points of beating them last year. Islip won their first match last week 61 - 0. Insane how good they are.

Hey - Is anyone else thinking of going into STA II in Conn on April 1???

Hey Kroc30 just one of the guys that trains with Ben L. up in New Platz as of now there’s about 4 of us going to STA2 if your gonna do the show hit up Ben so you can get some training days with us.

Hey I’m just getting into strongman and I’m hoping to get started by the middle of feb weather depending…

Do you know the weights of all the events for STA? Thanks.

If there are weight classes could you list those too please? I’m about 178 right now.

Will definitely try to make it up. Love training up there and miss it (it’s been well over a year), but the time factor kills me b/c it’s about a 2 1/2 hour drive each way from where I live now.

www.ctstrongman.com has everything you need to know. Show’s a little on the heavy side, but it’s a pro qualifier for lw’s, so that’s the way it should be.

Iron Island is more a powerlifting gym than a strongman gym but they do have some tires in the back. Leistner, who used to own it, sold it a while back and now runs a strongman specific studio I would call it called S.T.E.E.L in Stony brook.

If any long island guys wanna get together for some sort of weekly training get in touch with me. I have a log bar, an adjustable stone and farmers walk and I may know someone with a yolk and viking press and squat.

Even though the weather here normally isnt suitable for outdoor training, the owners of deer park golds are working on a sports specific gym in central islip, and I work for them , so I will try to get them to allow for this type of training there. The place will also have a track and there comes in our sled work and sprints.

That’s a great idea. Keep us posted. I’m game for forming a lifting/PL/Strongman training association. Will be in touch.

So, I just thought I’d mention that I’ll be in Eisenhower Park, Field 5 (right by the miniature golf) on Sunday the 24th, with my farmer’s handles, barbell, kettlebell, dragging sled-tire thingy, and 75-pound heavy bag (great for odd-object lifts). I’m just saying, in case anyone goes to play mini golf…that’ll be me there…with all the stuff…in case anyone wants to join in.[/quote]

You still training around the area? I just came across this site, I’ve been training heavy again in Farmingdale at xtreem gym looking to get a few dudes together
