We all know of some people who are super strong and could succeed in powerlifting, but just never really wanted to get into it. Carmen Leonelli is an extreme case. At 160 body weight, senior in high school (about 4 years ago), he squatted 465 for 21 reps and benched 365. I’ve never seen a person so strong for their weight. Please feel free to comment some insane feats of strength that you’ve witnessed that not a lot of people know about.

No it was not a typo, dude I was out of high school when it happened. Cardinal mooney is probably the strongest high school in ohio. If you know of John Simon, plays football for the ravens, squatted 700 as a freshman.

Even if he was an 18 year old freshman, I still don’t believe this. Lo Siento Senor

“squatted”
There are some strong football players out there, and there are some strong highschoolers out there, but without a video of what they are actually calling the “squat” I wouldn’t believe a word out of their mouth. I train with a LOT of high school football players, and the amount of weight they can legitimately squat is in no way even close to the amount of weight they tell people they can “squat” lol.

I second this, anyone who has ever coached or been around high school football players, knows this is pretty standard. Kinda like the “how many girls have you slept with arguement” now that I think about it.

I saw some of the highschool football team repping out where I lift with 405 last week. I am 100% certain none of them could have done a USAPL legal single squat with 315.
Leonelli was about 5’4, 160. Him and Simon went parallel, sometimes below. I’ll post a picture of the records later.

Your claim is essentially a triple-body weight squat for 21 reps. While theoretically possible, that’s a pretty big claim.

A picture of the record doesnt help with the credibility of you claim, a still picture of this in progress wouldn’t help. Sorry man, I want to believe this, just like I want to believe Paula Gretzky is in to me.
Hey is that 460 for 21 legit squat or You know kinda like your best bud the best raw power lifter in the world Dave Hoff squat.

Nice use of the Gretzky card!
well this thread sure escalated quickly…love me some interwebz
So for grins I ran 465 x 21 through my rep-max estimator and came up with 790. That would be some impressive squatting at 160 pounds.

does it get any better than this? I think NOT!!

Lol obviously the calculator isn’t insanely reliable at that number of reps but none the less I find it hilarious that he is claiming essentially max 10lbs heavier than Dan Greens world record at more than 60lbs less bodyweight.
As a few others have already chimed in: I, too, have spent an awful lot of time in high school and college weight rooms with football players. Good programs, too, with good strength and conditioning coaches (compared to the spectrum of guys I’ve seen in my travels). I am completely skeptical of any claimed “squat” number unless I have seen the kid lift or have the lift confirmed by someone that I know personally and trust to know what a good squat is. Not because I think people are pathological liars, but because 1) I don’t think most kids have ever really been taught how to squat properly (this even includes some places with decent strength coaches who just do not have the time, facility, or clout to get the kids to listen to them, or who face doubt from a hammerhead of a head coach that doesn’t know much about lifting weights) and 2) even if they have, the pressure on kids to “squat” big numbers for the sake of squatting big numbers (instead of worrying about how that strength actually translates to the field) multiplies that effect.
Much like jackkrash, csulli, and others above said: I’ve seen dozens of high school and collegiate football players “squatting” with 405 on the bar that probably could not have squatted 315 to a good depth. I’d believe that a kid put 460 on the bar and broke his knees 21 times. I would not believe that a kid put 460 on the bar and squatted it to parallel depth 21 times without a video of the feat.
