Will stronger denser muscles increase your metabolism as much as larger muscles?
Not sure what terms exactly to use, but what Im asking is will “bodybuilding” type muscles increase metabolism more than denser, more powerful muscles the type you get from power lifting?
Im new to the forums and wouldn’t consider myself a bodybuilder, my training goals are strength for mma and kickboxing. However, I am trying to get down to 150-155 pounds from 170 (mostly muscle) so that I give up less reach when fighting.
Another way of putting it is does muscle weight directly increase metabolism, or does it also have to do with the density and strength of the muscle?
I am not too fond of the words “dense” or “tone” or any of the catchy little phrases they use on tv to manipulate people and sell things.
I dont see how this applies to fighting sports, but to answer your question I would think it would be all about pounds of lean mass.
Comparing a bodybuilder and a powerlifter who are both 181 lbs at 10% bodyfat, I would say their maintenance calories are probably similar.
If you are looking for training for your sport, I would perhaps look at what top level guys are doing.

To be honest, its likely to much the same. But the science behind it is way above average joe’s level, and other factors in your life will affect your metabolism much more than your ‘type’ of muscle.
Your day to day activity will dictate most of your calorie expenditure. Sit most of the day it will be low. Move around alot and its going to be a lot higher
eat. get muscle. metabolism increases. $$$$$$$$$ simple.
