Strong Women Competition Adventure

Don’t mean to be totally trivial, but as a ‘critterslave’, I love your sniper-kitty avatar, EmilyQ!

And TNT-CDN, sounds like your rowers are psyched; “Bring it on!!” (I’m saying that on behalf of ouroboro_s, by the way!)

As more of a very SLIGHTLY mighty type, I’m not seeing the strength challenge circuit as MY best showcase, but trying one was a blast…and I’ve got ouro’s [strength challenge!] back!

One unexpected bonus from the Sat. comp. was a lurid-looking but totally painless bruise on one wrist. Even when I didn’t leave our little farm on Sun. (too busy napping!), a fellow in a pickup stopped by to ask directions when I was out doing chores…and he even pointed out my most excellent bruise before I had a chance to work it into the conversation.

I love souvenirs :).

p.s. MsM, merci…vraiment!

J, I am proud of you! Excellent job. You look great![/quote]

Thanks Push. It was a real rush for me. I’m planning my training strategy for the two in August. We found another one in Kingston. I just have to talk Micro girl into competing in these ones too.

Ingrid, Lisa, and Taylan are in for Woodstock. Last night they practiced the tire flip, frog walk, sled drag and farmers walk. Might have 3 or 4 more.

What weights are they working with? Can we come work with you guys?

Yeah TNT-CDN…I’ll donate complimentary [back-up!] coxswain expertise-once I learn how harhar-if you’ll let us in on some of your training/secrets!

Poor lil Ms. O an’ me are jest wanderin’ the streets, stealing sleds from kids (pretty tricky in the summer!), and borrowing tires offa trucks (some a’ them truckers don’t have much of a sense a’ humour!). Have mercy on us; your mighty rowers want some decent competition, yes? A ‘walkover’ would be sooo boring!!

p.s. Ms. O says she’ll do some shell et al. maintenance free, too :).

Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 6 PM. Everyone is invited.
Sorry for the short notice.

Sunday evening I spent 2 hours in Port Perry Ontario with TNT-Cdn and several members of his rowing team doing some training for the Woodstock strongman competition in August.

Like the competition last weekend I had a blast. We started with some light warmups with olympic lifts, most of which I had never done.

This picture is me learning the basics of the snatch. I maxed out at a fairly sad 65lbs but started learning the technique. The big plates are wooden training ones so it starts at a height equivalent to a 45lb plate.

I loved doing this but found the repeated explosiveness exhausting at the end of the evening. For sure it isn’t for anyone afraid to squat past parallel.

We did some tire flipping too. Yay. I’ve never done that before and was looking for flipping expertise. The tire in the picture is approximately 200lbs. The one in the competition will be 400lbs so we have to find a way to go heavier. I think all of us found it fairly easy and it was probably a nice size to start with the first time trying it to get the technique.

I arrived home covered in mud from my shins up under my chin.

We finished up with a 235lb sled drag comprised of buckets on concrete. We fixed a distance and took turns timing it over a fixed distance. We played around with pulling forward, backwards, grip etc.

What you see in the picture was what we finally arived at as the fastest and most efficient.

I was the slowest of the group but was still able to run with it.

The culmination of the evening was being provide with a post workout beverage by TNT for the road.

I’d like to thank all of them for allowing me to participate in their training for the evening and I hope to repeat it in a couple of weeks. I just hope Micropower can make it with me next time. I think he’s still looking for a cox.

Yee-haw, J-girl!! You look totally bitchin’, sweat + screaming muscles, et al. Seriously, ya look like you’ve been O-lifting/tire-flippin’/sled-draggin’ all yer life!! Show them rowers a thing or two!! (They’ve had a lot more practice; I bet they were impressed you kept up so well!) Rock on, Strength Chick!!

I am so terribly distraught that my high-level diplomatic talks with ____ and _____, regarding _______ precluded my participation in such an excellent workout…so sad :frowning: . Filling in for Angelina while she’s off for a bit has been rather taxing, I must say.

But, for you, what a kick! After a bit of frustration re: finding an opportunity to practice some of the flippin’! strength events, ya took yer chances and did REAL good :)! Just wait’ll these latest pics make the rounds…methinks folks are gonna start giving you a ‘wide berth’ when you amble around (don’t wanna get on the wrong side a’ that there badass chick!).

This is the state of one leg after last nights adventure. Those rower ladies are crazy

That’s a good one. I’ll pass it along. I had my belt with my too.

I don’t mind the cuts and bruises. However, bikini weather is here and I don’t want to look like I was beaten.

Just tell them you where beating with a tire.

After a couple training sessions the scrapes and bruises will be less from the skin getting tougher.

Are you sure those wounds aren’t from the air bag deploying when you got lost??? If micro comes next time I’ll have to order more first aid supplies. You done good girl.

Yes, he is pretty good. I’d never tried snatching before and was really enjoying it at the end.

He’s an even better first aid tech.

Hey, ouro, I just had the most brilliant idea (while picking up pony poops…an activity that seems to inspire more esoteric thought?!). I’ll have to check out a few things, but I just MAY have found a way to jumpstart my somewhat anemic Strength standing! And it doesn’t involve steroids, or disabling the competitition a la Tonya Harding!! Cackle, cackle.

p.s. TNT, I like what ouro’s said about your first aid prowess. Do you perchance keep a defibrillator at the boathouse?

No defibrillator, I prefer mouth to mouth and gentle heart massage, but I’m getting a little rusty and need some willing volunteers.

Judging from those pictures of your back development, me thinks you’ve been dipping into the horse feed. That’s not back hair, that’s a mane.

GOOD NEWS!!! Just heard from the Woodstock organizer and the log press is going to be LOWERED to 80-85 lb.

We celebrated Canada Day with a butt kicking workout. Lisa discovered a new technique for the Duck Walk - she fucking SPRINTED the 75’ in 11.5 sec. with 140 lb. The real kicker is a new kid named Christy (125 lb) that did it in 10.47.
We’ll keep increasing by 10 lbs. each week till we get to the competition weight of 180 lb.

I’ll get the girls to post some picks.
