Nice RDLs! Yes… you should definitely soften your knees… and make sure you are pushing your hips BAAAAAACK… like you are trying to touch your butt to a wall that is several inches behind you. Don’t stress about ROM too much… as long as you feel a good stretch in your hammies, you are fine. And yeah… I am struggling BIG time with squeezing my glutes at the top of a movement and not hyperextending… it’s rough!
quick hi-jack: So I have not really tanned in about 7 years… maybe hit the tanning bed 10 times in 7 years (always in the winter when I am feeling BLUE and need some light and warmth) and I was an avid sunscreen wearer all summer too… in fact, on vacation I usually get PALER since my spray tan rubs off and I don’t get any sun… =P HOWEVER… have recently been reading more about the benefits of the sun and I am amost positive that I am going to purchase one of these:
http://tanningbeds.mercola.com/tanning-beds/standup-tanning-systems.aspx
(bottom of the page… the Sun Splash Refresh)… tan skin, improved mood and overall health, optimal vitamin D levels and helps PREVENT and REVERSE wrinkles… UMMM… count me freakin’ in!)
Just trying to talk the BF into paying half ;D
I will let you all know how it goes! But yeah… read the article… I <3 Dr. Mercola… he is BRILLIANT!
George, thanks for visiting the new place and bringing compliments!
Molly, thanks for the helpful cues. Soft knees and butt to the wall FTW! We gotta do better on the back hyperextension, or CBear will be holding us down and tying broomsticks to our bodies. Oh wait…that could be fun…
I must admit, I getting more joy out of being tan in the dead of winter than I ever would have predicted. (Tan update: Day 3 of the spray tan and it still looks great. Not as dark as the first day but still good times).
However, having had a pre-melanoma dug out of my arm already (bad mole, not sun exposure per se) the whole scepter of skin cancer from sun/tanning bed exposure gives me great pause. Part of my unease is my total lack of faith in the medical establishment knowing what the fuck is going on in the human body. My doctor friends are quite candid with me about this – they just don’t know alot.
That said, I do believe Vitamin D3 is important. This past summer was the very first time ever that I sat out on the deck without sunscreen (covering my face) for exactly one hour most days. Looked and felt great. I started supplementing on Labor Day and I feel much better this winter because of it. Last winter my blood tests came back as very low Vit. D. and my doc prescribed high dose supplements for a few weeks, then retested to better results. So I know that I’m low in the winter.
Molly, I’d sure be interested in your results as you do more research and if you buy that product.
Your RDL’s looked good, breaking your knees and pushing your hips back more
could be the only knit picking
and bless you for the camera angle
I am light bulb white its very twillight
nice video kimba! i’m sure your naughty knickers are delightful no matter what color you are!
to keep the tanning high-jack going…i always wear sunscreen when i’m out in the summer, 40 on the face even. the mexican part allows for super quick tanning and trust me, i don’t want wrinkly skin so i’m cautious despite my natural bit of brown tendency.
Cbear-i have used the spray on sunscreen on my back for the bed, or i lay a towel down to cover the ink. all the color stuff is 3 years old and looks as good as when it went on. you can put sunblock on them.
there was a sign at the shop to ask for tattoo block or something. i asked and she showed me this tiny stick that you could swipe over a tattoo. i would have needed like 10 of them and someone to paint my back for me…haaa haa!
and about the D3- i just saw some fish oil that is supplemented with it…any thoughts? just get the straight stuff?
kmc, thanks for the advice. Glad my camera work meets with approval. ![]()
Talena, I do get the straight stuff D3 capsules from Trader Joe’s. Cheap enough, and I take about 3000 IUs a day.
I’m with you on the tanning. I have very fair skin - it’s yellow-toned, not pink, but still burns like a peach. I’ve had a few moles removed. None were malignant but the fact I have quite a few dotted around gives me pause. I always slap on the Factor 30 when I go outdoors (in fact, even in winter I use Clinique City Block factor 40 on my face). Us over 40s have to be very careful about photo-ageing!
LOL! I love that you’re enjoying your golden brown tone. Sigh, it is nice isn’t it?
As for the RDLs, I’ll add to the thanks for the camera angle - swoon. Also curious, what’s the protocol on how far down you’re supposed to go? I always go until I feel it in the hammies which is about mid shin, but I’ve seen vids where peeps almost touch the floor. Does it depend?
Kimba, are you saying that sitting out in the sun with sunscreen on isn’t as good for getting Vit D as it is without sunscreen?
Yes, I’ve read that our increasing time spent indoors combined with our penchant for sunscreen when outdoors has caused the Vit D deficiency in so many. Some doctors advise 10-20 minutes in the sun before applying sunscreen. It’s all somewhat controversial . . .

I also wear moisturizer with sunscreen in it. The very last thing I need is sun-induced wrinkles.

I’m quite surprised how much I like this tan thing.
Molly advised not worrying about ROM, just going for the hammie stretch, which I think is great advice.

Like Snapper wrote, the suggestion is that wearing sunscreen negates the Vitamin D benefit of the sun. Of course, not wearing sunscreen has its own issues. Everything in moderation is where I come out here.
Keeping in mind that my photo shoot is scheduled for next Friday, I asked my trainer-guy for a body-building style workout today, and for next week as well. This is really more his schtick over the strength training stuff, so it worked out nicely.
Leg Press
Didn’t catch the weight
3 sets of 15, feet pointed straight
3 sets of 15, wider stance, plie position
Incline dumbbell press
20s 1 x 30
Low cable rows
55 plus a brick
1 x 20 or so
Medium grip lat pulldowns
70# 1 x 20
Dips
BW 1 x 20
One legged glute raises, foot on bench
1 x 30 or so, each side
Front raises/lateral raises
7.5s 1 x 15 or so
Alternating biceps curls
17.5 1 x some – don’t remember
Lots of ab work
Cable hip adductions/abductions
12.5 3 x 10, both sides
Came home and ate most of a PB&J, but the Surge pretty well killed my need for sweet and couldn’t finish it.
Spray tan update: Day 4 – the tan has faded a bit more and there are places that are a bit lighter (like the backs of my hands for instance) that experience more washing or clothes friction. Still utterly fine for normal day-to-day, but for photos I would definitely recommend tanning the day before the shoot.
Good work but wasting PB&J breaks my heart. Don’t you know there are bulking bodybuilders who aren’t eatting right now?
and now I want PB&J…damn it.
Hahaha nice workout! and I am with Joe on the PB&J… JEALOUS!
About the tanning thing… I bought it yesterday… YIPPEE! I guess my thoughts are that I disagree with pretty much EVERYTHING that conventional medicine “says…” or at least what they have been saying for the last 10-20 years (Fat is bad! Dietary cholesterol is bad! Saturated Fat is bad! Salt is bad! Red meat is bad! All you need for healthy bones is Calcium! If you can’t sleep, take Ambien! If your dick doesn’t work, take a pill… don’t try to find the source of the problem … that’s too much work!)
So if I think they are mistaken with pretty much all of that, then wouldn’t it make sense that they are “off” about sun exposure too? In the article I attached, he clearly states DO NOT BURN! EVER! He says that burning and excessive exposure are both bad… and may cause problems… but that moderate, consistent exposure is actually WAY better for you than minimal or no exposure. He said he is MUCH more afraid of the ill effects someone will have from NO sun, than from too much sun.
Being someone with fair skin who has had 11 spots removed (i.e. lopped off) … I was a bit skeptical and I understand why you are too… but I have lots of faith in this guy and I really want to try this thing out. Many, many doctors and experts are actually putting Vitamin D3 above FISH OIL as THE most important supp you can put in your body. Dr. Mercola recommends sun exposure instead of taking a pill or tablet simply because your body will optimize it’s levels on its own that way… it’s possible to overdose if you take Vit D3 orally… but if you know your levels and they are low, then 5,000 IU’s a day is a good place to start. If you are in the normal range, then 2,000-3,000 IU’s a day is probably good. But unless you are spend time in the direct sun every day, you prob don’t have normal levels =D
Also, (to EVERYONE READING… not just Kimba… and I need to remind myself of this too) read the list of ingredients on the back of your sunscreen… YIKES! As a good rule of thumb: “If wouldn’t eat it… don’t put it on your skin!” Things get absorbed into the bloodstream even more quickly when applied topically… so if it could poison you if ingested… the don’t breathe it in or apply it to your skin! A lot of “experts” are now saying that it can be the ingredients in sunscreen that CAUSE skin cancer…
OK… HI-jack… OVER! sorry Kimba!
I forgot to add to today’s training:
Walking Lunges
18# body bar on back
142 steps, continuous no resting – twice around the gym.
How could I have forgotten those?!?!?

ha ha! It was delicious…natty PB and tasty strawberry jam. Have one right now!

That is so exciting! Major lifestyle shift for you, going from spray tanning all the time to this. I would really enjoy hearing your feedback on this purchase.

I completely understand where you are coming from on this one. My moniker is “kimba – cynical and suspicious girl”, and I admire those who think for themselves.
It sounds like you have done the research and come to an informed decision. That is far more than most people would do. I will indeed look into the sunscreen that I use regularly to try and get an informed opinion on that. I have already re-thought my former position that NO sun was good, and flowed more to the “everything in moderation” side of things. I’m already looking forward to summer and the delightful prospect of my daily sunscreen-free hour in the sun on my deck.
I take it as a huge compliment that you choose to write here. Vibrant conversations in my log mean that I’m doing something right!

I much prefer wearing light clothing to sunscreen, but here at 10,000 feet altitude you cannot stay out in the sun for an hour with out burning, I think I might be jealous…
I wholeheartedly agree with mmgalb.
Kimba, love the BB workout!
Hmmm…interesting stuff re: sun exposure. And to think, I JUST stopped looking like a jersey girl. Still dubious, but now I don’t feel so bad about my rampant sun worshiping come summer.
I’m a big fan of spending a lot of time in the sun and never really bother with sunscreen. But I’m just to ADD to use a tanning bed. Luckily down here in the deep South there are only a couple of months that are to cold to spend a lot of time outside. I also take Vit. D (5,000 IU) just incase my time in the sun isn’t enough.
George, yeah I’m at more like 300 feet so an hour outside is no problem. I do love mountains, though, so perhaps I am jealous.
Snapper, this conversation has definitely provided food for thoughts. That, and a sudden love of the tan. ![]()
Mascherano, one thing I DO know for sure is that when I compare my face to friends my own age who, due to work or playing tennis or spending lots of time outdoors, have tanned alot – they have way, way more wrinkles that I do. Whether or not the skin cancer risk is really as great as “they” say it is, that is my own personal experience, and I’m sticking by it.
Joe, you can have your sun, but if you guys have my snow down there – please send it back. ![]()
you can keep my snow. all of it.
