Maybe it’s just my current headspace however I wince when I read folk on here going for deloads.

Save your deloads for when the shit hits the fan.

When you’re sick or going on holiday.

A planned deload is nuts and leaves gains on the table.

Your pussy ass weights program is hardly making a dent.

Your 6 day PPL is a sham and is mostly a rest session in the gym interspersed with short bursts of ‘work’

You work harder trying to come up with an Instagram post telling folk how hard you worked. Absolute lifting loser behaviour.

There are guys out there training every fucking single day. Guys who are operating on minimal sleep, gaining like 80s WWF Superstars because they’re too busy devoting their energy into training like fucking animals instead of worrying about not getting enough calories in or overtraining and not ‘supercompensating’

Just train as often as you can and do it with some of that va va voom shit.

You could get crushed by some fucking dumb ass drunk driver tomorrow or end up with some random medical condition that takes you right out the game.

Always keep that shit in mind when you train, men. Train like it’s your last session

Your results are dictated by dark place engagement.

How long can you work within that dark space.

Fuck your deloads. They are stealing gains off your table.

Good rant! But, I can’t 100% agree with it
 I know that for me personally, I get all the deloading I need when life makes me miss training days, but not everyone is in that boat. You’re right that most people aren’t working hard enough to need it, but there are some people on here that very much need to do more resting and/or eating for recovery, and are tanking themselves by their refusal to let their body heal and grow.

More people need to remember this advice, though. There are no guarantees, so make the most of the time you have!

I am a bit like @OTHSteve and not sure I agree completely. For me a deload is really just managing volume so I can move forward and do more. As you read my log you already know that typically my deload had heavier weight than the hardest week of my training block, I just manage the volume. A delaod is similar to just resetting and starting a new training block. If I was to just keep adding 2.5kg every week I would eventually reach a point where I just cant hit the reps. Just trying harder or pushing myself harder isn’t going to work.
Now if you think about a deload as a week to relax and do nothing, then I agree with you it is unnecessary. There are plenty of times in a year where you have a holiday or other break that can serve as a recovery you dont need to add more.

The question of “do I really need time offf” is always playing in the back of my head. There are definitely times that I really really really feel like taking some time off, but I’ve also never regretted a workout, but have regretted procrastinating or skipping workouts so I err towards not taking time off from training.

I think a “mental deload” might be more useful than a physical one. For example, I might “deload” from weeks of disciplined heavy lifting by taking a week to do fun conditioning workouts I’ve been putting off.

Even so, I do sometimes wish I had a reason to take a “real” deload

Jumping in on the “time off” topic:

  • I think there is value in turning on maintenance mode from time-to-time. Things like 5’s PRO with FSL, Simple & Sinister (a Pavel program), or simply dropping the structure and getting your work in by biking, hiking, running, sports, etc
 This keeps me refreshed and constantly reminds me that I don’t need to go for PRs to keep making progress.

  • I also think most folks don’t work hard enough to justify a deload.
