Two articles on MSNBC today are treating something we’ve all known for years as if it’s “news”. You should print these out and post them at your gym, or give copies to your friends. They’re mainstream media pieces that inform and help convince “lay” people.
The first article raises awareness of the fact that “…the American College of Sports Medicine has revised their guidelines and determined that regular strength training builds and maintains a healthier body as men age; cardio alone isn’t nearly enough.” Wow. Who’d a thunk?
The second article profiles a private gym for teens in California. (They want to franchise it nationally.) The gym is geared specifically toward teens with specialized exercise programs for younger adults - like a rock climbing wall, cheerleading conditioning classes, even nutritional counseling and academic tutoring. The article says that such programs fight teen obesity, gives kids a place to go when school’s out (as opposed to running aimlessly on the street) and conditions their minds and bodies as a precursor to better health as adults. Oh, really?
These are pretty good articles that seem to state the obvious - that weight training from youth through old age is one of the best things you can do to to maintain superior health.
The fact they’re in the mainsream media rather than in specialized fitness publications/websites is interesting and useful. It’s showing a growing awareness to what T-Mag readers already know.
