I love stories like that. People see someone who needs help and do something about it. I remember a story a while ago about someone who was trapped under a car and there was a crowd just standing around. Some guy stepped up and lifted the car enough so the trapped person could be pulled out.

Reminds me of a story I heard on the radio this morning (it was an old program though).
Apparently on a bus traveling through Canada, a man started stabbing the guy next to him at random (the guy next to him was listening to headphones and did not provoke him according to witnesses).
The 37 other passengers did nothing except shout for the bus driver to stop, and then they all got off the bus as fast as possible. Meanwhile the stabbing continued. After 50-60 stab wounds were inflicted the man doing the stabbing then proceeded to cut the victim’s head off while the other passengers hung around outside.
Some witnesses claim that the man tried to cannibalize the victim but those reports were never firmly confirmed nor denied by the police.

There is a huge difference between trying to lift a bus and trying to stop a lunatic with a knife in a crowded bus in the middle of nowhere at night.

It’d be a lot easier to get involved if the government wasn’t hell-bent on disarming its citizens. If I had a gun, a guy like that would be dead. If I had a knife… more of a question mark. My bare hands? Not likely.

You’re telling me that one of the 37 other passengers couldn’t have gotten behind the guy with the knife?
Noone had a hardcover book, lunch box, thermos, umbrella, purse, etc that could have been used to club him from a bit of a distance? How about the fire extinguisher that was probably at the front of the bus?
This was one guy, described as “calmly stabbing the victim” by one of the other passengers. He was most likely not a heavy weight contender, nor an experienced knife fighter.
He apparently was pretty intent on his victim. One person probably could have done something, at least to distract the guy while help was called. Two or three people working together almost certainly could have overtaken him from one angle or another.
I didn’t really have a point. I heard the story on the radio and thought of it when I saw this thread. Not all of us are up to being heroes, but not all of us are irredeemable assholes. We can’t generalize.
I’d like to think I would have done something but you never know until you’re there. I’m sure some people “understand” how shocked or scared the other passengers were, but that understanding should not be misconstrued in your own minds as an excuse for condoning this as an acceptable level of human behavior.
I personally think we are more than the days that are numbered for us in the here and now, and living a few days right is better than living many wrong.

Stuff comes up. It’s called conversation. I am not going to go looking for an old thread every time a discussion grows naturally from another discussion.
There comes some point when things can be too compartmentalized. It would not make sense to dredge up an old thread in order to make an off hand comment which is at least in part a reply to things said in this thread and in part general reflection on humanity (also a subject of this thread).
