Strength for a Powerlifting or Strongman Comp?

I would consider myself a novice but I am loving the heavy lifting! I would like to do a Powerlifting Meet or maybe a Strongman Competition but I’m not sure if I’m strong enough.

At what weight should my big 3 lifts be at to be strong enough for competition?

Thanks for any info!

If you can lift the bar on all 3 lifts, you can compete.

Winning is a different issue, but it’d be foolish of you to expect to win your first time out, no?

powerlifting and strongman comps are VERY different…

a highly ranked strongman lifts at my gym sometimes and i would say if you can’t put enough weight on the bar to make it look like an iron rainbow, you wont be winning…

but like T3 said, you can always compete, but winning is another story

i would find one in your area and attend, see what its all about and what level you are at currently in terms of being ready

For PL info, what weight are you and are you taking raw or geared?

What weight are you??

Age??

Sex??

All of those things will have an impact.

I did my first meet at 19 and 198lb. Only did something like 365/245/420, but I had a blast!!

Im 240lbs, 28yrs old, Male. Im not expecting to win anything I just would like to compete (more against myself than anything). All my numbers are Raw. No belt, straps, or wraps either. 300x3/230x3/406x3. I have just started strength training and will look into some PL competitions near me.

As far as strongman goes are there any novice competitions or do I need to be extremely strong for those?

There are indeed novice competitions, but not at every show. Check nastrongmaninc.com for upcoming comps and see if they have novice divisions. Also find a trainign crew around you so you can try the equipment.

At 240 you’re 9 lbs over the cutoff for LW. At your strength levels I wouldnt tell you to diet, maybe clean up your diet if its not the best, or do a water cut (just be prepared to be called a cheater on the intertubes if you do that) but you need to get stronger whether you go LW or HW.

Also start training your overhead - strict, push press or jerk - and your grip - double overhand deads, plate pinches, etc

To be blunt those numbers aren’t too great for someone your weight, but I want to stress that PL is generally friendly and supportive of all lifters from the weakest to the strongest.

If you go in with the attitude that you are competing against yourself and you want to get experience for the future, everyone should (and hopefully will) support you.

It is very motivating to train for a meet, you get good experience so when you are strong enough to compete you will not be making the newbie mistakes, and seeing others lift a lot of weight can make you realize you might be able to do that as well.

If you are on the fence go watch a meet first and see how it is run. Feel free to wear a belt and I would suggest you start doing that on your heavy squats and deads. Start off with a smaller local meet if possible. Good luck with it, it can be a blast.

Tim made great points about a powerlifting meet. I agree that it would be worth it to go check out a meet, and even compete.

However, as for strongman, each and every meet will be different in terms of events and weights. I’d suggest checking out local meets in your area on nastrongmaninc.com and pick one out where you can do or can come close to doing all the events. No matter how poorly you do, you can’t help but have fun.

Thanks for all the info guys. I know my lifts aren’t that strong for my size…but hey everyone has to start somewhere right? I have only been working out for about 1.5 years. Most of that was crossfit and I have only been doing powerlifting for bout 3 months.

Right now I am making really steady gains and will find a local powerlifting meet and compete. Once I get stronger I will look for a strongman comp where I can do all the events.

Considering how strong you are now (saw the videos etc), Its nice to know I’m actually slightly ‘ahead’ of where you were at my age
