Strength Challenge and Joker Sets

I had my first meet yesterday and I gotta say, everything said about competing in powerlifting is true. It was a great experience and I’m more motivated than ever!

I used the strength challenge templet with FSL assistance work for prep for my meet and it worked really well. There is another meet in November I want to do and I plan to use the same template again, but this time I want to include joker sets.

How would you include joker sets in the strength challenge? Would you include them on the singles day? It seems like this would put me at or even over my max quite often, which isn’t bad of course. Would it be better to only do jokers on the days without singles? Also if you push a joker set to a new 1RM do you adjust the training max for the next week?

Nice job!

?d go with some singles on 3s and 5/3/1 wave

Jim wrote about it many times: the answer is NO. Keep your TM going up slowly as planned.

Doesn’t the Strength Challenge from Beyond basically have Jokers built in? You are hitting a single or PR set at your TM (and sometimes 110% TM).

If you wanted more singles you could ramp singles like on page 32 in the “Joker Sets” section of Beyond. However, I probably would not mess with that template especially since you had success with it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Also, that is one of the more in depth templates that looks like Jim put a lot of time into it.

No, keep with the progressions. A higher TM will not make you stronger.

Well done! This is what we like to hear! I will echo the others by saying never, ever increase your TM just because you set a Joker PR. Stick with the program!

Thanks for the info everyone.

I think what JMac says is true, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I tend to over analyze things. I’ll leave the template the same.

Thanks again everyone.
