Steven Lim: 'How I Became A Hunk'

The thing that is really weird about that dude, is that he must have a high opinion of himself. I think that he actually thinks he is in good shape. So that begs the question, who the hell is he comparing himself to?

I don’t know how many times I’ve thought about that. I’ve seriously considered opening a gym in either Singapore or Taiwan. When I went to Singapore a few years ago people looked at me like I was a monster, and I’m pretty small.
True. At 85kg (187lbs) (5’8) I get comments on my size, which is odd considering I’ve been training for less than 2 years.
The minute your show muscles (delts, traps, arms) get anywhere close to ‘decent’ or larger than average, you start getting noticed, hence all the multi-year veterans in my gym with average to good upper bodies and crappy legs. That and the fact that most Singaporean guys who aren’t fatasses in the 20-30 age bracket sit between 150-175. You know what they say about Chinese food…

There are some Strongman communities developing in Singapore, two that I’m aware of. With a small population they’re bound to get noticed. I think both communities are working well and try to secure equipment to help each other train (yokes, prowlers etc). I think one of these communities started a Powerlifting section as well. I know some of the Strongman winners and top 10 finishers so it may not be a surprise if I know who you’re talking about.

Both Strongman and PL communities are dwarfed by the interest and collective community of BodyBuilding. There is an Asian championship being held this weekend (http://www.sbbf.org.sg/) . And there are other events held through the year for BodyBuilders (MuscleWar etc).

I am happy that a majority don’t train legs, leaves the squat rack empty for me. Of course they do use the leg extension and leg press machines which makes it even easier.

Was in one of them (with the powerlifting section) last year. What I can say is that its pretty crappy and the so-called “powerlifting section” is a huge gimmick. waste of time and money(it is expensive to a 17 year old student.)

Are you from Singapore as well? did u catch ronnie coleman in iluma?

You mean Team Iron Behemoths? The PL section was no good? Hmmm. That’s no good.

Yes I there’s a topic in the GAL forum about the visit, I posted some of the videos from the training session at Gym @ Orchard. I train now mostly at Cali Bugis. I met one of the Team Iron Behemoths at Cali Bugis and that’s how I got to know about it.

OMG this guy does 24 pullups…can YOU imagine the strength it takes to do this heroic feat?

Did you see the before and afters? OMG i MUST have that book. He is a 180lb monster!!!

Heard it’s scheduled for a launch for Christmas 2010, saw it in a book shop last week.
It’ll probably come out much earlier than that though.
This joke should not go unnoticed!!! Well done!

DB is not known for subtle witty remarks, so this flew under the radar. Good job DB.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear with my initial jib. Dammit.

Oh please open a gym in Singapore, preferably in the east.
There is a lack of powerlifting culture here as well, i might add.
There is an SWF gym in kallang area that is opened to non competitors or athletes. Not exactly powerlifting, but the factilities there should be well equiped for heavy deadlifts and squats (bumper plates, platforms etc)

He is not, by a long shot, an accurate example of what an average asian guy is.
I never said he was. I should also mention that most of the Asian guys that I’ve met recently don’t think I’m attractive either because I’m too muscular for them. So it all works out.
Here is the real reason why Asian gals don’t like Asian guys!

Gremlin

How come I think I can tell you are wearing a Timex Sleek just by the wristband?!

I dunno Nards…you have the same one?

Totally not the response I figured I was going to get on this one…epic fail!

Gremlin

Sorry, I used to have a neat Timex like that.

OK, more on topic…let me see, um, OK here we go,

What’s the difference between an Asian guy and an Asian lesbian?

About 3 inches.
