So, I am at the gym today and there’s this guy working out. I see him there often, he is not very big 215, 5’7" maybe, but obviously very strong. Despite the fact that he is not even close to being the biggest guy in the gym he still looks like a god among insects.
Long story short, I see him in the locker room later-keep in mind that we are not friends, I do not eve know his name-I jokingly say something along the lines of “Hey man, what do I need to do to be beast like you?” His response was like a real-life version of a T-Nation forum. “I’ve seen you in here, youre a strong guy but you try to use too much weight. Who are you trying to impress? Cut the weight and do the shit right. I bet your diet is shitty too. Clean up your diet and get better technique and you will start making gains.”
My first reaction was to get pissed, who the fuck is he to say I have shitty technique? I am six inches taller, 30 pounds heavier and stronger than this guy. But, then it hit me-he has a better physique than I do. A hard thing to admit but its true. Then I realized that I would rather get scolded by someone who knows what theyre doing than be praised by someone who looks like someone stuffed ten pounds of shit into a five pound bag.
I know the first response will probably be that damn Hercules “cool story bro” bullshit, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this same experience or at least some existential weight-room epiphany?
I’m almost positive that everyone, at some point, realizes they could have worked harder, differently, or made better gains. Sometimes the truth hurts but let’s be thankful for honest people. If we could all check our egos and accept some constructive criticism, we’d all be a little further ahead. You asked him for his opinion and he gave it to you. Good for you for accepting it.
Have I ever had this epiphany? Of course, just not under the same circumstances. The realization that someone looks better than I do and I could look like that too if I had made more of an effort whether it be diet, being more consistent, etc. But hey, we’re all a work in progress.

I hate that question…no easy answer.
I everyone would adopt that attitude…
Youre right, there is no easy answer. But when someone asks me the same question, I either just shrug and laugh it off or tell them to keep working hard. What blew my mind was his radical honesty. I really appreciated it.

Its definitely not small, but its not huge either.
If you subscribe to Rogue Vampire’s belief, under about 245 is tiny.

that would depend now would’t… Are we talking 20% BF or 10%
while it’s outside the norm, he just posted yesterday, for anyone that remembers 1morerep, dude weighs 165 and I’d guarantee no one would think he weighed so little.

5’7" @215 w/ a belly is one thing. A ‘pool ready’ 5’7"-215 man is a big man. Less than 1% of natural male lifters will ever see 3.0lbm per inch of height. (most of the aided lifters will never see it either)

This means you are gay bro.
Could be, I did break out into that damn “Call Me, Maybe” song. I just couldnt help it…
Are you sure you didn’t rub this guy the wrong way with how you posed your question? If I didn’t know him I would have said something along the lines of you “You look awesome, do you mind if I ask you how you train?”
I don’t know how you gestured or what your tone of voice was like but the way it was written makes it sound like you could have had a sarcastic tone.

I didn’t even know people took him seriously. Not that everything he says is wrong I just always read his posts waiting for the punch line.

this, and 6" taller with 30# heavier is essentially a wash LOL
I heard it is approximately 10 pounds per inch…
So if this guy is 6 inches taller he would be “Approximately” the same size at 275.
