Starting Olympic Weightlifting

Still rather new at this but my 2 cents

Exhale, holding my air too much slowed me down.
Shoulder dislocates are the shit.

Good luck

today i got a new PR on my snatch 65kg,
currently C+J 85kg

I LOVE THIS

thanks everyone on this thread

two new questions, how do you avoid agrevating other lifters by making tons of noise?
Also i sometime bruise my shoulders in cleans, how do i avoid this?

A. Who cares about the other lifters? They were where you are at some point weightlifting clubs can have a “fraternity” like elitist attitude at times. They’ll get over it if you just stick with it. Unless you’re celebrating like Jon North all the time as a beginner…if you’re doin that then stop lol.

B. Is the bar crashing onto your shoulders? If so spend time working the clean rack transition with just the bar otherwise time and practice is gonna be the answer.

ok, my catches are ok. I can c j 50 kgs with ease, although i find it hard to snatch it.
I think my new problem is getting dwn under the bar fast enough

any tips?
Give these a try:

And post some video for some feedback. I can’t be of much help there but I’m sure someone will :o)
Thanks for posting that link, it finally got me to properly practice snatch technique.

Like the OP I’ve been powerlifting a few years and would like to compete in weightlifting in the future.

My C&J is ok but still got a long way to go with technique. Snatch is awful but it will start coming along now I’m working on proper technique.

Good luck OP, maybe I’ll see you in a comp sometime in the future… lol

Thanks man, on that note where should i look for the details of Oly meets in the UK?

Glad you’re enjoying yourself!

This has become my favourite video on youtube. Watching it illustrates so well how I’m falling down on using hip drive and a shrug on my first pull.

One question in PL sometimes a world record holder will use techniques that aren’t advised for begginers… is this the case with OL? If i copy the video in its minutia will that help me?

There is the whole dropping your butt as low as possible which puts the knees at a very weird position. You shouldn’t do that. I don’t ever remember dimas doing that since he had a very very strong pull anyway so he didn’t need it.

You can copy his technique but know that everyone has a different body and needs to find some things that work for themselves. Dimas(and kakhi even more so) had pretty short legs. Look at his starting position and how far back his knees are. Most people will have their knees a lot more forward. That’s one example. He also used a lot more legs than back at the end of the pull. And I know his coach kept shouting to him “only legs” or “all legs” cause his were very strong. Others will lift more with their back.

The important part in my opinion is to try it out and copy it. take videos and see if you are actually copying it. A video rarely lies. And if its not working out for you, try to copy someone else’s technique and see if that feels better/more consistent.

The only certain rule in weightlifting is that your back should always be tight.

but then you see this and are like wtf?

definitely don’t copy the lower back not being tight like he did it in this video.

 1. other olifters won’t give a f0ck, if they do f0ck’em
 2. Your timing is off, it’ll get better

Strength when you receive the bar is timing, technique and experience. You will need 10’000’s of reps before you’ll really nail it at limit weights.

Comps in the UK:

Do you lift at a club? I lift in the UK in Woking in Surrey.

No, i would however like to. Currently I lift at my university (warwick) gym. I get free coaching but i think i might be able to make faster progress if i was at a club

Who’s your coach? There are is a club near Birmingham in Oldbury. Check it out.

well…

i think…

that while there are commonly accepted ways of doing things…

there is also a bit of stylistic variation.

i mean… each style seems to be defended as the ‘best way of doing things’. but… i think one gets a bit of choice about certain things. or it might be useful to try it a couple different ways and see what seems right for you.

i’m aiming to keep my hips down during the first pull. the dimas lift looked pretty much PERFECT to me. that is what i’m aiming to do. except i think i like to have my feet a little wider than he does… and my knees need to go out more to the sides to the bar can clear my knees on the way up since i got longer legs than him (in relation to my torso, anyway).

Here is Everett on the first pull (hips down style):

Some others don’t like that, though. Kono reckons you want to start with your shoulders ‘over’ (in front of) the bar and keep them there for as long as possible. E.g., :

You need to figure out what seems to suit you. I reckon.
