Starting My Fitness Journey (16 YO)

Should have been more specific, i guess. If your only goal is to “look good”, you’ll never hit that goal because there’s always going to be something you aren’t totally satisfied with, even sexy beef castles like yourself. If your goal is to squat 3 plates, no amount of body dismorphia can take that away from you, you did it or you didn’t.

Tim, you’d be such an awesome guide for this kid. He could learn a ton from you.

“Looking good” is a poor empirical goal, but makes for an excellent stabilizing goal. That is “looking good” will be a motivator to maintain a decent body composition. This was the approach that I took.

Max lifts make good empirical goals. They can be tested periodically. They aren’t subjective, so you can be confident in how far you are from accomplishing those goals. This too was my approach.

I suspect that you and i think of these things in a similar way, but with different terms.

A possible difference is that “looking good” is an extremely important goal to the OP, IMO.

I suspect that it’s a big driving force for all of us, if we’re honest.

My point is that “looking good” as an important goal will help prevent the person from putting on too much fat.

How many members ask about cutting when it is clear to us all that “looking good” couldn’t have ever gotten them into the condition that they find themselves in?

On a weekly basis, but i believe the problem with these posters tends to be that they haven’t worked hard enough to either bulk or cut effectively. It’s not a case of poor goal setting, it’s a case of poor effort.

“Expectation management” as well. I’m a big fan of asking the question “how long HAVEN’T you trained?”

People love to write how they’ve trained hard for MONTHS and aren’t seeing results, but if you HAVEN’T trained for decades, it’s gonna take some undoing before you can start doing.

ill be honest i havrnt lifted and therefore brand new I tried to lose weight a year ago could thought it was genetics but it was a horrible diet and work ethic

Why weren’t you honest before?

This is becoming frustrating my dude. People are trying to help you. Giving them a complete and honest background goes a long way.

no no i wasnt lying before you guys were talking about how people say they’ve traind hard for months and got no results in saying that’s no my case because as I stated before I’m brand new I was just saying if I don’t get stronger its not my genetics but work ethic

I think the point was also that, even if you train hard for a couple of months, you probably won’t see crazy results. Crazy results don’t happen in months.

I genuinely don’t understand how you know how to execute the 4 key barbell lifts if you’ve never trained before.

How many pull-ups can you do today? You are light enough that you should be able to do quite a few considering your body weight.

It would be helpful for me to guess your potential.

As far as training the muscle, how often do you do pull-ups? Very seldom is the answer I am looking to see. Now the number of pull-ups you can do is an untrained number.

i dont have a pull up at my face I’m gonna get one put for some upper body strength I can 50 pushups non stop

You should have one at school
