Starting Bodybuilding! Lost 65 lbs, looking for trainer in Philly

Hey everybody, I’ve lurked on this site for many years gathering advice and building up the courage to really work on developing my own body.

This past year I’ve focused on fat loss as I was obese and have lost 65 lb. This brought me from 270 lbs to 205! I still have quite a bit of fat I want to lose but I figured I’d start posting as I have a goal of getting into bodybuilding.

I actually really need to work on muscle gains as my doctor said I’ve lost too much muscle while working on my weight loss this year.

But anyways, I’d love to hear from y’all if you have any thoughts on who would be a good bodybuilding trainer/Coach in the Philadelphia area. I see a lot of trainers with more average looking physiques but I want to find someone who really understands that drive to get massive muscles and not just have average gym-goer muscles.

Looking forward to being a part of this community! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Congrats!

Was the weight loss medically aided? It tends to be a pretty common side effect, from what I’ve read (although also maybe overblown according to the more recent literature, so who knows).

In any case, significant weight loss will nearly always come with the loss of lean scale weight. So we can increase your muscle mass the same way any of us would after a diet. In your case, you probably don’t want to jump back into a big surplus, but we do need to shift your macros to bias protein and your activity to bias resistance training.

How old are you? I ask because your doctor’s muscle mass concern is going to become increasingly relevant as you age… and will get more difficult to actually improve.

What are you doing now, both diet and exercise wise?

It’s unlikely you need (or would even benefit) from a bodybuilding coach at this stage. A solid trainer or even just a plan (depending on where you are) can go a long way. Accountability will be the most important tool - that’s where I think a trainer probably provides the most value for the most people. If you go “in” here, though, we can also provide a bit of that. Start a log and put in the work, and you’ll find this to be an extremely supportive community.

There is a theory that the “jacked” trainer has superior genetics and is likely enhanced so he/she won’t know how to help those of us with regular genetics and are natty.

I second the opinion that you likely don’t need a trainer unless you are looking for motivation and accountability. Pick a solid program, tweak your diet, and be consistent.
