Starting 5/3/1, Can't Even Handle Bodyweight?

Has anyone done 531 as a beginner as their first program? I just looked at the progression rate each month for 2 years of training and my lifts would look like this (I am starting light as jim suggests, then taking 90% of that for my training max):

Bench press - 60kg - 120kg
Military press - 45kg - 105kg
Deadlift - 100kg - 220kg
Squat - 70kg - 190kg

So converted that would be

Bench press - 264lbs
Military press - 231lbs
Deadlift - 485lbs
Squat - 418lbs

If I eat lots of food, get 8 hours a night, work on my mobility etc I think I could go without stalling for the whole 24 months, seeing as my numbers are starting so low. Has anyone gone that long before stalling?

I wouldn’t get too caught up in projected #'s at this point especially 2 years out. That said the only weight that seems completely unrealistic is the military press. The others are lofty goals, but doable if you’re smart.

I would use the 5 steps forward 3 steps back concept and I wouldn’t skip your deloads.

Thanks for the advice. My squat is about shoulder width toes slighly pointed out. I can’t do a low bar comfortably.

That’s about how I squat. Maybe slightly more narrow. I really like squatting in Oly shoes with this stance.

When I tried squatting in them it felt easier to keep my knees out, also felt easier to keep my body braced at the very bottom of the squat. I felt more comfortable squatting bum to calves than trying to stop just below parallel, felt like I had to relax rather than stay tight when I tried a higher squat.

Ya, I can see that. I think they help keep the torso more upright too, which is a plus.

Would you recommend I start 5/3/1 on monday or keep practising the lifts for a while seeing as I am new?

I have been doing 5 sets of five on the main four lifts at weights I know I can manage. Just doing the movement a lot is making me feel more comfortable with my setup. Especially for the squat.

You could do either. If you keep “practicing,” start adding weight to the bar. Personally, I would do the latter for at least a couple weeks before switching.

I know it sounds stupid but it is just giving me the chance to get reps in.

It is about 5 miles to the gym so cycling there and back seems to be making me lose a bit of weight too as it is.

I invested in some addidas sambas which I quite enjoy squatting in, also means I don’t have to change in and out of the olympic shoes.

Will keep trying both see which I prefer.

Soles are far less compressible than the chuck taylors.

OK guys I am starting a log, I would love you guys to check it out from time to time, this thread really gave me the kick up the arse I needed.

I am still following a 2 year plan and I have decided on this as my final decision for how to go about things:

12 months Greyskull LP (light conditioning like walking, slow swimming, cycling)

12 months 5/3/1 conditioning specific to marines

Thanks guys

You won’t go wrong with Greyskull. Great choice!
