Seeing as the next match up for GSP is Shields in Your opinion who has the better resume.
Shields has beaten
Dan Henderson
Robbie Lawler
Carlos Condit
Yushin Okami
Martin Kampmann
Jason Miller
Paul Daley
Hayato Sakurai
George has bested
BJ Penn
Jon Fitch
Koscheck
Thiago Alves
Hughes
Miller
Sherk
Karo
(not sure if Karo and Hardy are all that noteworthy)
I want to hear what you think. I think these are the two best fighters at WW.
While Jon Fitch is impressive his key wins are who Alves, Diego and Thiago?
IF GSP wins this one, then and only then will I say he’s cleared out the division. I think this one could be more competitive than people are thinking, although I though Kos would be tougher this time.
Sidenote I’m still pissed Shields vs Jacare didn’t happen.

Would BJ Penn be similar to Jake Shields?
Nah, Shields’ stand up is nowhere near Penn’s. I’d say that’s his most obvious weakness. His chin is straight up in the air and he’s no threat whatsoever in the striking department. He’s good at making people fight his fight though, and taking it to the ground, which is the only explanation I can see for him never having been KO’d. Shields is also a far more dominant wrestler than BJ.

I think GSP dominates Shields. Shields’ strength is pulling people into the ground game. He has great wrestling, and a totally dominant top game. GSP’s strength is everywhere, and that includes dictating the nature of the fight. I don’t think Shields can take down Georges. I don’t think he’ll be as dominant on top as he was against Hendo (who was pretty gassed in that fight). And I certainly don’t see him being successful on the feet.
Sidenote I’m still pissed Shields vs Jacare didn’t happen.

Penn never shoots that much, but he did take down Frankie when he tried and even got George down in their first fight. He’s fought guys better than George everywhere, but nobody as well rounded. I am excited to see how this one plays out.

Shields is the only WW of note who GSP hasn’t beaten IMO. I agree that Shields could give him problems in certain areas, but GSP is just so good at making his opponents fight where he wants to fight. I think he’ll use his much improved striking to pepper Shields (very similarly to what he did to Kos)on the feet, use his wrestling to defend Shield’s takedowns, and possibly wind up KO’ing/TKO’ing him. Or just wind up winning with a dominant decision win.
I am not counting Shields out though, or saying that he doesn’t have a chance of winning should he get to a dominant position on the ground.
Gotta go with GSP. Well rounded fighter that has proven that he can beat anyone. I hope that he knocks Koschecks teeth through the back of his head and makes him shit all over the mat.
We need a minimum post count in beginners on this site geez
Shields has a very slick ground game and is also good at getting other people to play his way
His last two fights he looked like shit Hendo put the biggest ass whopping on shields and then keeled over and played dead
Kinda shows how easy it can bet shields,
shields has great MMa wrestling in that he has been very successful getting the fight to the ground all the time, basically he has taken down everyone he fights most of whom where lacking TDD
His striking might be too rudimentary for GSP .
We should not compare fighter a to b it never is that cut and dry and rarely is it relevant
I’m interested to see what game plan GSP uses. We have seen 2 different game plans for fighters who like to take you to the ground and get on top. The first game plan was to take down people who wanted to take you down; put people who wanted to be on top on their back.
This was used for Hughes II, Koscheck I, and a lot of Fitch. Now those guys want a td to then GnP and shields wants a td to then submit but both want to be on top. His 2nd game plan against those guys was to beat them standing, used during Hughes I, Koscheck II. Or he might use some combination of both.

Not to mention GSP trains with the Canadian Oly Wrestling team and was invited to be an alternate @ the games. Whether this means his wrestling transfers over well to MMA wrestling, it still says somthing.
Canadian Olympic wrestling?
About as good as the Samoan hockey team.
^^^ This…
That should not be used as a defense for his wrestling ability. Hes a national hero and his popularity would bring the press and more of the public to the sport. I can bet if gsp was on the wrestling team at the Olympics I wouldn’t have to stay up until 3-4am to watch the matches sense that’s when they decide to broadcast them.
Hes a great mma wrestler and internationally he would wrestle freestyle(not folk?!? do they even wrestle folk in canada?) but there is no doubt in my mind that he would get totally man handled maybe winning a couple matches at most but getting eliminated fairly quick. If you think otherwise then I am speechless… canadian wrestling team… /facepalm.
Yah your right…“those guys must suck up in that there canada”. (face palm for your ignorance)
GSP does not train like most mixed martial artists do…as in go to a MMA gym and learn collectivley how to become good at all aspects. He hires the best of the best. Muay thai coach, boxing coach, ju jitsu instructer and wait for it…best group of wrestlers to train with. He takes all aspects of the game and puts them together in his own specialized way. Which has in turn bread a champion. Do you really think he couldnt afford to bring in someone better if the guys up there sub-par to his needs? Hes one of the highest paid mixed martial artists in the world and also the UFC poster boy. Shit…if he wanted the US olympic team DW would spend the money to send those guys up north once a week for wrestling practice.
GSP wrestles in Montreal at an OTC. They are multiple Olympic medalists training and coaching there including World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Gia Sissaouri. I dont know where him being invited as an Olympic alternate came from because he didnt wrestle at the Olympic trials

Guys Brock Lesnar is too strong and to much of a freak to lose to Cain and he was division 1 national champ, his wrestling is superior. He’s going to take Cain down and pound a whole in his face.
