Squat Suit Alterations

When getting a squat suit or briefs altered, how much expaining do I need to do? Has anyone here had any experience explaning this to a taylor/seamstress not accustomed to working on powerlifting gear? (This suit would be not be going to Ginny Phillips or someone on that level especially knowledgable about altering squat suits). There are several taylors in my area that do tack and shoe repair, so I figure these guys have the gear to stitch heavy double ply poly. I think know about how much I want taken in (about an inch on each leg and 2-3 inches in the hips).

Is there something special I should request in the stictching pattern or thread? I was going to get my legs taken in a little as part of this- is better for them to take material from the outside of the leg or the inside? What is a reasonable price fo this kind of thing?

How about you just send it to Ginny and don’t worry about trying to get someone that doesn’t know what they are doing to fix it.

A blowout with 600 lbs on your back would give you a bad day.

Ginny does a great job, is not expensive, and very quick. I paid 50 bucks to get the legs let out and straps adjusted on my Metal Pro.

For something relatively minor, I wouldn’t mind going local, but for the mods you are looking for, I too would recommend Ginny…

That being said:

  1. Ask for high-strength nylon-core or upholstry thread.
  2. Titan touts that they never use a straight stitch…Most look just like Zig Zags though.
  3. Have them use a bunting needle to avoid nicks and tearing on the fibres of the material.
  4. Explain to the tailor what you are going to do with the garment.

I live near the ocean and I have found sailmakers to be very helpful and way beyond highly skilled…

This is a Metal PS also. The more I think about what I want done (e.g., I am also considering getting the straps redone with velcro), the more I am starting to consider going with Ginny Phillips. Thanks to all for the advice. By the way Matt, how long did it take her to turn around your suit?

Ginny takes from 1-3 weeks in my experience. The cost is no more than any other seamstress.
